IECSC New York Draws a Crowd
More than 9,000 attendees walked the aisles and attended classes at the 2007 International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference (IECSC), formerly the American Spa Expo, which was held March 11–13 at the Javits Center in New York City. Spa professionals from around the world had an opportunity to check out the latest trends, techniques, and products from more than 300 manufacturers and suppliers, as well as learn from prominent educators during the education conference program. "We could not have been more thrilled with the event this year," says Kathy Gruttadauria, show manager of the IECSC events. Presented by American Spa magazine, IECSC offers three shows a year. The next IECSC will take place June 2–4, 2007, in Las Vegas. www.iecsc.com.
Microplane Receives Best New Product Award
Microplane's new paddle-style Foot-File won the title of 2007 Best New Product in the Beauty Accessory Category at the 2007 New York International Gift Fair, held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. The Foot-File, which eliminates dry, callused skin without the need to soak or moisturize before using, competed against more than 60 products for the award.
Casa Blanca Raises Funds for Starlight Starbright
Casa Blanca Salon & Spa (Rancho Santa Fe, CA), hosted an event to launch its new website and raise funds for the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation's PC Pals program. PC Pals will supply Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego with durable, mobile, and secure laptop systems to meet the needs and raise the spirits of the pediatric patients there. The laptops provide medical information in a fun way and allow patients to keep in touch with family and friends, as well as manage school assignments using email and online research tools. Guests of the event enjoyed a silent and live auction, a lingerie and loungewear fashion show, a celebrity chef cook-off, and samples of the latest hair-, body-, and skincare lines by event sponsors Pevonia Botanica, Bumble and bumble, and Archipelago Botanicals.

REPÊCHAGE CERTIFIES TRAINERS AND BRAND MANAGERS
Repêchage and its founder and CEO Lydia Sarfati recently certified 44 trainers and brand managers from the U.S., Canada, Ireland, England, Mexico, Germany, and Poland at the Lydia Sarfati Post Graduate Academy (Secaucus, NJ). In order to receive certification, students were required to attend an intensive four-day training program, which covered presentation and communications skills, new products and treatments, and the Repêchage business plan.
St. Julien Celebrates Second Anniversary
St. Julien Hotel & Spa in Boulder, CO, recently celebrated its second anniversary. To honor the occasion, the hotel extended special offers, including a gourmet prix fixe menu at the hotel's restaurant and the Celebration Package ($329 and up) consisting of one night's room accommodations for two, a bottle of champagne, chocolate treats in the room, turn-down service, and a $75 gift card to be used at either the St. Julien Spa or toward a meal at one of the hotel's restaurants.

Sundance Loves PureOlogy
PureOlogy recently sponsored the Sundance Film Festival's Eco-Lounge Green Room Event at the Meyer Gallery in Park City, UT. Sonya Dakar Gives Back at the Oscars
Sonya Dakar partnered with the Adwil Agency to host the Oscar Gifting and Beauty Lounge Post Event Wrap. More than 200 celebrities, media, and publicists attended the event, which included services by Bahram on Sunset, Exhale Mind Body Spa, ME! Bath, Sonya Dakar, and Tarte Cosmetics. Sonya Dakar asked celebrities, including Drew Barrymore, Madonna, and Gwyneth Paltrow, to help raise funds for the non-profit organization CancerCare by signing a Sonya Dakar 365 SPF 30 Sunscreen to be auctioned off on Ebay's MissionFish, a service that donates goods to be auctioned for cash for nonprofit organizations and donates 100 percent of the proceeds to the charity. Along with the sunscreens, a gift bag of goodies was also set aside to be auctioned off.
Dermalogica Pampers Fliers
For the third year, Dermalogica, in partnership with Cathay Pacific Airlines, is providing amenity kits to all Hong Kong-bound airline passengers traveling in business and first class. The kit comes in a custom-designed Agnes b. travel cosmetics bag with a signature stripe-print. The kit for women contains Super Rich Repair, Climate Control, and Skin Hydrating Booster. The men's kit contains Oil Control Lotion, Climate Control, and Skin Prep Scrub. "Our continued alliance with Cathay Pacific sends the passenger a powerful message of service, consistency, and quality," says Dermalogica CEO and founder Jane Wurwand.
CHINA GLAZE AND ARDELL PAMPER THE STARS
China Glaze manicurists and Ardell makeup artists were on hand at a private pre-Oscar party to pamper celebrities and VIPs. The China Glaze Blush collection was a big hit, and everyone left with a bottle of Flirt nail polish. Ardell makeup artists demonstrated the beautifying effect of faux eyelashes.
Spa Finder Presents Consumer Spa Expos
Spa Finder recently announced it will host consumer expos in Aspen in July and at New York City's Grand Central Terminal in November. The expos will showcase interactive exhibits, skin and beauty product demonstrations and giveaways, spa treatments, and spa cuisine from the world's leading spas. The first expo, Aspen Spa Day, will include exhibitors from Kama Ayurveda, Pevonia Botanica, Red Mountain Spa, Sothys Paris, and more. More than 1,000 consumers are expected to attend the event. The Spa Experience at Grand Central Terminal will allow more than 60 leading global spa companies to interact with the many commuters and shoppers who pass through the terminal every day. "There is really no better way to appreciate what the spa lifestyle is all about than to actually feel the massage, taste the cuisine, or experience a treatment," says Sallie Fraenkel, Spa Finder COO. "We felt the timing was right to bring the spa experience to life by offering the world's top spa companies the chance to interact directly with potential customers."
SpaRitual Dominates the Runway
SpaRitual recently supplied the nail color for the Vera Wang models at the New York Fall/Winter 2007 Fashion Week show. Vera Wang asked SpaRitual manicurists to file the models' nails short and round for a classic look and paint them neutral shades to complement the bold colors and fabrics of her early 20th century Russia-inspired collection. Air of Confidence, a sheer peach cream, and Effervescent, a sheer pink tint, both from the Airy Sopranos Suite collection, were used to create subtle looks. The models also received gift bags that included SpaRitual products.
People on the Move
Fairmont Raffles Hotels International recently announced the promotion of Anne McCall-Wilson to vice president of spas. In her new role, McCall-Wilson will oversee the operations of all Willow Stream, Amrita, and unbranded spas, as well as the openings of all new spa locations across the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Raffles Hotels & Resorts, Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts, and Delta Hotels brands. In her previous position, she served as general manager of spas at Fairmont Raffles Hotels International.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group recently appointed Andrew Gibson to the position of group director of spa. With 25 years of luxury hotel and leisure services experience, his responsibilities include leading and managing the global activities of Mandarin Oriental's luxury spa division.
Creative Nail Design recently announced the addition of several new employees. Jennifer Phelps has been appointed direct key accounts manager, Barbara Fogleman joins the team as Midwest regional sales manager, and Mitzi Angelle has been appointed as South Central regional sales manager. The company also announced the promotion of Herman Paez to director of international sales marketing for the Asia Pacific region and Melanie Faatupu to education program events manager.
Christopher E. Laxton has been appointed chief executive officer of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. His responsibilities include strategic leadership, staffing, program management, and the oversight of the organization's $11 million budget.
Kahala Hotel & Resort (Honolulu) recently appointed Paul Telford as spa director of The Kahala Spa. Telford has more than 10 years of experience in the hospitality industry, most recently serving as spa director of the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita in Mexico.
