Phil Kelly, spa director of Raindance Spa at The Lodge at Sonoma (Sonoma, CA) passed away on July 20, 2003, after a four-month battle with acute leukemia. Kelly was diagnosed in late March and was on his way to remission when he suffered complications from a weakened immune system. A memorial service was held in his honor in Sonoma and attended by family, friends, and staff, including several colleagues in the industry who traveled from various parts of the country to say goodbye. "As many in the industry know, finding highly qualified, caring professionals to lead spa operations is no easy task, and Phil Kelly was a gift," says Ann Emich, good friend, former co-worker, and spa director at Spa Gaucin at The St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa (Dana Point, CA). "I watched Phil coach, guide, and lend a shoulder to everyone who worked with him. He earned the respect of the team and his fellow managers. He was enjoying much success and had many plans. For many in the industry who knew him, Phil was the most gentle friend a guy or gal could ask for. True to his word, spoken just a few short months ago, he would leave his mark on the spa world. He just did it way too soon for us who miss him."
