Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa Gives the Heart a Little Love This February

Several years ago my dad went in for a routine checkup. Unfortunately, the physical was deemed about as routine as they come when he was told he would need bypass surgery, one of the most common surgeries performed in the U.S. Considering the fact that heart disease is a leading cause of death, it should come as no surprise that February is National Heart Health Month. While most spas are gearing up with romance-themed packages to put couples in the mood for love, Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa (Miami) is focused on helping guests to lower their heart disease risk factors. This February, Pritikin is offering a special Heart Health Package ($550 per person per week), which includes an Echocardiogram, Carotid Ultrasound, updated blood panel, and a consultation with a cardiologist. While celebrating the month with rose-petal baths and chocolate-dipped strawberries and Champagne is nice, getting spa-goers on track to achieve a healthier heart is priceless. While I appreciate an integrative approach and applaud the efforts of the Pritikin Longevity Center, it's somewhat unfair to compare the heart health package they are offering, to that which most spas and day spas do, since almost no other spas have a medical staff of cardiologists and physicians on hand for just such a comprehensive package. Having said that, let's examine what it is that most spas can do well, and how it factors into heart health. A variety of medical studies have linked chronic stress to heart disease. Likewise, studies have also connected the role of social interaction and relationships to one's heart health. So it would stand to reason that activities which help to reduce chronic stress and increase positive human interaction, is good for the heart. To that end, a basic spa/day spa is a perfect resource, because all the medical tests, panels, and heart exams won't change the fact that an individual with or without heart disease will still need to foster a lifestyle to promote or improve their heart health.

To answer your specific question, at my spa, we provide fitness classes, Qi Gong, yoga, meditation sessions and workshops, as well as frequent events to engage the community in educational and other recreational activities. In addition to that, we encourage family-based participation in what we provide, which creates a network of support for whatever the guests we care for need, to help keep them on track. That notwithstanding, there is something to be said for that celebration of love that takes place every February.
