San Francisco Tops List of Healthiest Cities, Per Survey

San Francisco ranked No. 1 on the list of healthiest cities, according to a survey by Mindbody, the company announced on Feb. 8.

The rankings were part of the Mindbody’s 2023 Wellness Index Report.

“Each year it's so exciting to see what cities will make the top 10 list, giving us an idea on just how residents prioritized their wellness,” Mindbody CEO Fritz Lanman said. “As the definition of wellness continues to evolve, the annual ranking of the Healthiest Cities in America look at various consumer health metrics that contribute to overall wellness. After a few challenging years for the industry, it's especially exciting to see new cities enter the top ten, while seeing San Francisco jump to the top for the first year ever, showing us wellness is on the rise everywhere.”

Last year, San Francisco ranked sixth on the list, and its move to first place knocked three-time winner Miami to second place.

Of the 50 cities surveyed, San Francisco had the highest percent of residents who do not smoke. Additionally, San Francisco ranked second highest in the percent of residents who exercise 90 minutes or more per week, with the most popular workout being yoga, according to the ClassPass Look Back Report.

For the first year ever, Chicago and Albuquerque, New Mexico, made the top 10 list, coming in at fifth and sixth respectively. Both cities ranked high in the percent of residents who get sufficient rest.

The list ranks the 50 most populous U.S. cities based on the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, social, and occupational. Cities were measured by how much residents exercise, how much sleep they get, what they feel their stress level is, how many smoke, how much alcohol they consume, how much they interact with friends and family, and how spiritually fulfilled they are.

To calculate this annual ranking, Mindbody surveyed more than 17,000 adults in the 50 most populated U.S. cities and ranked those cities from healthiest to least through a proprietary scoring algorithm.
