Top 10 Plastic Surgery Trends for 2016

As the end of 2015 draws nearer, industry professionals survey the innovations and techniques that rose to popularity in the last 12 months and are eager to provide their predictions for the next. This has been an especially exciting year for the aesthetics industry, including new FDA approvals, new injectables (Kybella), and new equipment (Verju and CoolSculpt Mini). Here are the top 10 plastic surgery trends for 2016 according to board-certified plastic surgeon Norman Rowe, M.D., from Rowe Plastic Surgery (New York City).

  1. Millennials will increasingly become users of plastic surgery. The 20-somethings represent approximately 20% of the cosmetic surgery population, and this is only going to increase, (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery).
  2. Minimally invasive procedures will continue to grow as they present less downtime and ever improving results due to better pharmaceuticals and technologies. Over 80% of the almost 11 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2014 were of the non-surgical type. (ASAPS)
  3. The male patient is an ever increasing user of plastic surgery. Male patients represented 10% of all cosmetic patients in 2014.
  4. There will be ever expanding uses for fillers in 2016. While Allergan, recently received FDA approval for the use of the volumizer Juvederm in the lips, there is use in the jawline, nose, hands, breasts, as well as other areas of the body to reverse the signs of aging.
  5. The amount of plastic surgery procedures being performed will continue to increase in 2016 as most American put the economic down turn of the last few years behind them. Americans spent $12 billion dollars on cosmetic procedures in 2014, the most since 2008 (ASAPS).
  6. Social media, FaceTime and Skype will continue to fuel the desire to have plastic surgery as people of all ages are increasingly have a more visible presence in the form of real time conversations, selfies and having a larger photographic presence on various social media outlets.
  7. There will be a continued increase in the number of women seeking vaginal rejuvenation procedures. These procedures will follow the current trends, namely, not only surgical rejuvenation but non-surgical (laser) vaginal rejuvenation as well.
  8. Using the patient’s own fat as a volumizer all over the body (face, breast, buttock) will continue to increase as patients increasingly desire the greatest impact with the least downtime.
  9. Non-surgical fat removal will continue its meteoric rise in popularity offering a method to permanently and reliable remove fat without the need to undergo surgery and not of the traditional post-operative recovery.
  10. The number of non-Caucasian people seeking plastic surgery will continue to climb. Non-Caucasians represent almost 25 percent plastic surgery patients. (ASAPS).
