Best Foot Forward

New York City-based podiatrist Oliver Zong, D.P.M., performs procedures for less-than-perfect feet, such as toe shortening, lengthening, padding the bottoms of feet, and slimming down pinky toes or even removing them. However, not all podiatrists are happy about this new business boom. "I don't think it's ethical unless you're having pain," says Hillary Brenner, D.P.M., a podiatric surgeon and member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. "It's trauma to the foot." However, Zong believes it's the same as any kind of cosmetic survery. "Clients are embarrassed by the situation and afterward, gain self-esteem and feel more confident," he says. Whatever side of the debate you fall on, it seems that tackling "toe-besity" is here to stay.
