Recession worries may be waning for potential clients and spas alike, but many consumers still want a bargain. However, this proclivity toward thriftiness can be dangerous when it comes to something as permanent as facial plastic surgery. Discounting and offering deals through sites such as Gilt, Groupon, and Living Social may cast your medical spa in an unattractive light. In fact, 96 percent of American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) members are opposed to consumers blindly purchasing discounted procedures, because the provider may be offering treatments that are not appropriate. According to a recent AAFPRS study, cost is a major deciding factor for 71 percent of patients. Despite the temptation, the AAFPRS warns consumers to think twice before purchasing bargain Botox. “Our members nearly unanimously agree that prospective patients need to exercise caution when considering online deals offering reduced rates on surgery and injectables,” says Edward Farrior, M.D., F.A.C.S., president of the AAFPRS. He adds, a consultation with prospective patients and proper credentials are key to bringing in loyal customers.
