The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Miramar Labs MiraDry System for the removal and permanent reduction of unwanted underarm hair of all colors. The MiraDry System uses proprietary MiraWave technology, which delivers precisely controlled microwave energy to remove unwanted hair. Unlike laser hair removal systems, microwave energy doesn’t require a chromophore to be effective and therefore can be used on hair of all colors, including light shades, and is also not limited by an individual’s skin color. With this clearance, the company has launched the MiraSmooth treatment, an alternative to laser hair removal that can be offered by esthetic providers and is available in select markets. “We believe the potential for microwave energy in aesthetics is exceptional,” says CEO and president Michael Kleine. “Miramar was the first company to receive clearance for axillary sweat reduction and we are now the only company with FDA clearance for permanent reduction of axillary hair of all colors. These are both tremendous market making opportunities in esthetics.”
