Aveda Speaks Out About the Paris Agreement

Aveda has spoken out about President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw America from the Paris Climate Accord.

Aveda’s mission statement is “to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.”

In a statement posted to its website, Aveda stated the following:

“Guided by our mission to care for the world we live in, Aveda has long been committed to addressing Climate Change as one of the key threats to the biological diversity upon which our products and each of our lives depend. The Paris Agreement created an extremely important framework under which almost 200 countries have committed themselves to a path for holding the rise of global temperatures well below 2 degrees Celsius in order to prevent major ecological disruptions. Aveda joins many other businesses, local government and academic leaders in continuing to support climate action to meet the Paris Agreement. Aveda remains committed to our longstanding efforts to fight climate change. We will continue to purchase renewable energy and carbon offsets for our manufacturing and other North American operations while striving to be more energy efficient, work with suppliers to reduce the carbon footprint of our supply chain, work with NGO partners and other businesses to advocate for urgently needed policies, and educate the professionals in our retail, salon and spa network and their guests on actions they can take to make a difference.”

This isn’t the first time Aveda has spoken out about the environment.

Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda, was known as a pioneer of holistic beauty and an influencer of environmental responsibility. During his time in the beauty industry, Horst published Aveda Rituals: A Daily Guide to Natural Health and Beauty. He was also named one of the most influential environmentalists in the U.S. by Vanity Fair (twice), and he has received the Rachel Carson Award for Lifetime Commitment to Environmental Ethics and Integrity.

For earth month, Aveda recently campaigned to raise $6.5 million by selling candles and using the hashtag #avedacleanwater. During April, Aveda donated 100 percent of purchase profits to the Global Greengrants Fund for water related projects in 85 countries.
