Farm-to-Treatment-Table Trend Takes Hold of the Industry
Although I'm often asked about spa trends, I've found it difficult, lately, to pinpoint any that are truly original. One, however, that has been gaining momentum recently is the farm-to-treatment-table trend. A variation on the farm-to-table concept found at restaurants, it fits well with the industry's efforts to be greener. The Spa at the Omni Mount Washington Resort (Bretton Woods, NH) is right on trend with its new Herbal Cleansing Ritual, which changes seasonally. The ritual incorporates fresh herbs from the spa's own outdoor Herb Garden. Guests are even invited to select the herbs of their choice to be used in creating a natural aromatherapy oil. The spa also offers the full-body Herbal Garden Treatment, which also uses local plants from the garden. Farther afield, the Dolder Grand Spa (Zurich, Switzerland) features Nature's Organic Seasonal Facial by Amala. It includes a relaxing foot bath with herbs from the hotel garden in addition to a seasonal chocolate treat following the facial. At Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa (Moab, UT), spa-goers can take advantage of a host of natural products thanks to the ranch's 1.5 acres of organic produce. It just so happens that the garden managar's wife is also an herbalist and founder of Sister Root Medicinals, a line of medicinal concoctions that are retailed in the spa. Products include Birch Sunbutter SPF and Salve-ation to heal dry skin. An onsite organic garden can also be found at Hotel Caesar Augustus (Capri, Italy), where the Wellness Area's therapists use fresh herbs and fruits in treatments. Relying on drops of basil, marjoram, rosemary, and sage oils blended with extra virgin olive oil, massages such as Shiatsu, Bio-Energetic, and Anti-Stress are just some of the services that capitalize on this growing trend.
