A visit to the Southern U.S. usually includes many meals filled with comfort food, roasted meats, creamy side dishes, and rich desserts. That's all lovely once in a while, but spa-goers looking to slim and clean up their eating on vacation want an alternative. Deer Lake Lodge and Spa, a boutique wellness resort and holistic spa, is filling that void again this fall with a special raw foods-themed weekend of classes and demonstrations in conjunction with its regular weekend detox and cleansing program. Day passes are also available for Saturday, if booked before September 12. Raw foods demonstrations will be led by chef Sabali, owner of Original Healing Earth, and Vegan Comfort, an educational outreach company that concentrates on healthy lifestyles and plant-based catering.
A full schedule of raw food classes will teach guests how making simple changes in diet choices can quickly set them on the journey to better health. Guests will also enjoy yoga and life enhancement classes along with a full menu of spa treatment options. The schedule includes:
Thursday, September 18 - Orientation, 6:30 p.m.
Meet and greet guests with a review of the workshop schedules. Raw appetizers and specialty juices will be served.
Friday, September 19 - Raw Food Basics & Nutrition, 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Includes a lecture on the benefits of raw food nutrition on the body. Attendees will receive a raw lunch and dessert.
Global Dance Workshop with Zinnijah, 7:30 - 8:45 p.m.
Will feature live drumming from the Kucheza Ngoma Dance Company.
Saturday, September 20 - Raw Food Hands-on Workshop, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
A hands-on workshop where students will learn how to make easy meals with a few common ingredients. Topics include flavor and texture, balancing, food storage and proper digestion.
Pool Dinner Party, 6:30 - 9 p.m. - includes a specially prepared five-course meal from chef Sabali.
Sunday, September 21 - Detoxing with Raw Foods & Certificate Ceremony, 10:30 a.m.
Students will learn how to maintain a plant-based diet when they return home, address common detoxification practices and foods, and receive their certificate of completion.
