Just as not all skincare is created equal, not all sunscreens are created equal either. Unfortunately a majority of SPF on the market doesn’t live up to claims. Yikes, that’s a lot of sunburns. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reviewed 1,700 SPF products in its sunscreen guide released this week. A whopping 80 percent of products offered inferior sun protection or contained worrisome ingredients. Some Hall of Shame culprits include higher SPF levels than the U.S. Food and Drug Administration say offer notable protection. Even worse new research in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that many Americans aren’t protecting their skin as much as they should. That’s where spas and your skilled estheticians come in. Clients need the latest and greatest SPF insight so they can decipher what oils, lotions, and sprays will help them beat the heat.
