HOSPITAL-BASED SPAS OFFER WELL-ROUNDED APPROACH TO HEALING

In a handful of hospitals across the country, patients are being treated to a new level of healthcare. Hospital-based spas offer complementary treatments such as massage, reflexology, water therapies, and facials alongside traditional Western medicine. These integrated spa facilities are in a position to attract new markets and new sources of revenue by appealing to health-conscious consumers interested in a well-rounded approach to healing.

Here's a look at some of these revolutionary hospital-based spas:

The prototype for the hospital spa model was opened in 2000. Hackensack University Hospital's Beyond Day Spa in Hackensack, New Jersey was called by Dana Points, the former executive editor of Self magazine, "the future of wellness and how people choose to take care of themselves."

The Clarian North hospital location is the second for OLOGY. The first spa opened about 14 months ago in Clarian West Medical Center in Avon, where the number of spa customers and surgical procedures has grown steadily. The spa's skin-care line Philantropik, a private label cosmo-pharmaceutical line, donated proceeds to various health care organizations.

The Oasis Spa is nestled on the fourth floor of the Transitional Care Unit Building of Banner Desert hospital, and is linked with Banner Desert's in-patient Integrative Therapy Department. The spa offers Thai Yoga massage Shirodara alongside laser hair removal, Photorejuventation, and clinical skin-care services

Inner Spa inside Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Ill. Opened in 2003, Inner Spa not only offers traditional spa fare, but also gives clients access to physician specialists who can provide consultations on such subjects as breast health, integrative medicine, dermatology, and podiatry.

Memorial Hermann's Garden Spa in Houston, Texas, opened February 24, 2003 in 5,200 square feet of space adjacent to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. The spa offers an array of services that include aroma-steams, body polishing, dry brushing, body wraps, reflexology, pre- and postnatal massage, customized facials, Kneipp Water Kurs, makeup application, and hair care.
