The International SPA Association (ISPA) has released a new study conducted in 2006 by Association Resource Centre, Inc. Here are some of the major findings of the 2006 spa industry classification study:
Number of Spas in the United States:
* There were an estimated 13,757 spas in the United States in August of 2006, up from 10,128 spas in April of 2004. This represents an annual growth rate of 16%.
Distribution of U.S. Spas By Region:
* The Southwest has 3,139 spas, which is 23% of the total spas in the United States. The Southwest includes California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.
* The Northeast has 3,131 spas, or 23% of the total.
The Northeast includes New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Marlyland, Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
* The Southeast has 2,800 spas, or 20% of the total. The Southeast includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennesse, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
* The North Central region has 2,621 spas, or 19% of the total. The North Central includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.
* The South Central has 1,302 spas, or 9% of the total. South Central includes Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
* The Northwest has 764 spas, or 6% of the total. The Northwest includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Numbers of Spa By Type:
* 10,988 day spas in the U.S., 80% of the total.
* 1,218 resort and hotel spas, 9% of the total.
* 915 medical spas, 7% of the total.
* 484 club spas, 4% of the total.
* 77 mineral springs spas, 0.6% of the total.
* 71 destination spas, 0.5% of the total.
Annual Revenues of the Spa Industry:
* The U.S. spa industry generated $9.7 billion in 2005, up from $7.0 in 2003.
* This is an average annual growth rate of 18%.
Annual Revenues By Spa Type:
- Day spas : $6.794 billion.
- Resort and hotel spas: $2.026 billion.
- Medical spas: $469 million.
- Club spas: $209 million.
Annual Revenues By Region:
- The Southwest: $2.766 billion
- The Southeast: $2.476 billion
- The Northeast: $2.257 billion
- The North Central: $1.240 billion
- The South Central: $558 million
- The Northwest: $338 million

* There were 131 million spa visits in 2005, up from 109 million visits in 2003.
* This is an average annual growth of 9%.
Number of Employees in the U.S. Spa Industry
* There were 267,400 total spa industry employees in August, 2006; 124,500 of the employees were full-time, 101,300 were part-time, and 41,600 were contract employees.
* There were 215,200 total spa industry employees in April 2004, there.
* The average annual growth rate between 2004 and 2006 was 11% for total employees, 6% for full-time, 19% for part-time and 11% for contract.
