The Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF), a public charity with a mission to advance the knowledge and practice of massage, announced the winners of the 2013 Student Practitioner Case Report Contest, which provide an opportunity for massage therapists and bodywork professionals to deliver evidence-informed massage information to the public. This year, the grand prize Gold Award was awarded to Jennifer Nielson from Vancouver, BC, Canada, who will receive a $2,500 cash award, contingent upon undergoing the peer review process with the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (IJTMB). Her winning case report was titled, “Therapeutic Massage in Treatment of a Chronic Hyperventilator with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.” Additionally, she will be invited to present her report at the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) National Meeting, which takes place in Sept. 2014. Morag Wehrle from Vancouver, BC, Canada won the Silver Award, and will receive a $2,000 cash prize. Her case report was titled “Manual Lymph Drainage and Therapeutic Massage in Treatment of a Professional Violinist.” Linda Ching from Edmonton, AB, Canada took home the Bronze Award, and will obtain a $1,500 cash prize cash prize. Her case report was titled “The Effects of Massage Therapy on Piriformis Syndrome.” An Honorable Mention Award was also given to Meghan Reid from Osoyoos, BC, Canada for her case report titled “The Effects of Massage Therapy on Pain Associated with Spinal Cord Injury: A Full Body Approach.”
