Mindbody Releases 2022 Beauty and Wellness Trends Report

Mindbody recently released its 2022 Beauty and Wellness Trends Report, which contains data from more than 16,000 Americans about their beauty and wellness routines. The survey shows the definition of “wellness” is evolving, which presents new opportunities for the salon, spa, and integrated health industries. The top three beauty services were manicure/pedicure (up 50 percent), eyebrow waxing/threading (up 50 percent), and Botox fillers (up 37 percent) while the top three wellness services were IV therapy (up 50 percent), red light therapy (up 50 percent), and massage (up 37 percent).

A majority of respondents now see wellness as worth prioritizing and willing to put in the time to do so, as 65 percent of Americans believe beauty/ grooming is a part of wellness, while 78 percent of American say wellness is more important than ever. The definition of wellness is changing and evolving as it encompasses more than just being in shape, but rather reducing stress, feeling confident, finding a sense of community and belonging. Consumers actually prioritizing mental wellness above them all. Yet, the report found the pandemic continues to have an impact with women and younger generations wellbeing being slightly more affected by the pandemic (51 percent women to 46 percent men). Fifty-seven percent of Gen Z (18-24), identified the pandemic negatively impacted their mental wellbeing compared to 53 percent of millennials (25-40), 46 percent Gen X (41-56), and young boomers (57-65).

The survey also found Millennial men have a opportunity or growth, as they have more buying  power than any other demographic while also participating in wellness services more than any other. Millennial men participate in barber services, advanced skincare, full-body skin treatments, and non-surgical body-sculpting treatments more than any other group.

Skincare is growing, especially for younger generations as more than a third of survey participants say they look to beauty establishments to provide continued guidance on skincare. Millennials (44 percent) and Gen Z (42 percent) are most interested in skincare education (compared to 30 percent of Gen X and 16 percent of younger boomers). Facial exercise is also rising as nearly three in ten respondents already do or are interested in toning their face muscles with facial exercises, like face yoga. 

The report also found that more than half of Americans want to strengthen their immune system to live a long and healthy life—and many are looking to wellness services or treatments to help. Services such as IV therapy and red-light therapy have seen a 50 percent increase in adoption since last year and nutrition counseling is one of the top overall wellness service.
