UC IRVINE PROVIDES REAL-WORLD SPA AND WELLNESS CURRICULUM

UC Irvine Extension is launching a new course in the Spa and Hospitality Management Program entitled, "Integrative Wellness within Spa Environments: Rituals of Healing." The program is the first on the West Coast established to provide real-world curriculum to meet the demands of the bourgeoning spa market. The innovative new course will take place July 13th and 14th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Spa at Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort, Dana Point, California.
"This course is designed to provide a deeper level of awareness of the psychological effects and archetypal roots of the spa experience in ways that are personally meaningful to every spa-goer," said Kirwan Rockefeller, Ph.D., director, Arts and Humanities at UC Irvine Extension and co-instructor of the course. "This two-day course will take an in-depth look at the potential of the dynamic combination of ancient traditions, modern innovations and complementary techniques for health promotion, rehabilitation, stress management and wellness."

According to a nationwide survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2002, more than 62 percent of American adults use some form of integrative medical therapy. The course will demonstrate how this trend dovetails with the reality that spas are in the midst of an exponential period of growth. Spas have now become the fourth largest leisure industry in the U.S., with revenues surpassing amusement and theme parks as well as motion picture box offices.
Students will explore approaches for nourishing the mind, body and soul within any spa environment. Potential and existing spa owners, directors and managers will learn to identify and integrate rituals of healing into their specific spa bridging the gaps between health and wellness, prevention and the body-mind connection.
"Throughout the course of human history, people have always gone to spas to find balance and healing," said Patricia Amrhein, Ph.D., O.M.D. L.Ac. and co-instructor of the course. "Spas offer a sacred respite from the anxiety of our fast-paced, frenetic, everyday lives. This course illustrates how relaxation and balance speak to the deepest part of the human spirit in ways that contribute to and are interconnected with overall health and well-being."
