WAGEWATCH UPDATES SPA INDUSTRY COMPENSATION STUDY

Updated data for the Spa Industry Compensation Survey is being collected by Scottsdale-based WageWatch, Inc., the leading online compensation and benefits survey company. Preliminary results reveal that there are typically three components of pay for Massage Therapists — pay by the hour, commission pay, and fee for service.

Half of the spas reporting data on Massage Therapists pay a combination of hourly pay plus commission or fee for service pay. One fourth of the spas pay commission only, and the other fourth pay fee for service only. The average hourly rate paid to a Massage Therapist is $12. Fee for service can range from as little as $8 to as high as $130, with the average fee for service paid to the Massage Therapists ranging from $30 to $35 depending on whether they receive hourly pay or not. For those earning a commission only, the Therapist earns almost half of what the customer pays.

"The need to recruit and retain employees in this industry is strong," says Margaret Dyekman, President and COO of WageWatch. "The spa industry has seen tremendous growth in the past several years, and spas associated with hotels, resorts, and casinos compete for the same people who would be hired by day and medical spas."

For the second year in a row, WageWatch is collecting data on 30 jobs found in spas including Spa Attendant, Spa Manager, and Aesthetician. The survey was first initiated by ISPA, the professional organization for the spa industry.

The 2006 survey is open to all spas, including resort/hotel, destination, mineral springs, medical, cruise ship, club, and day spas. For additional information, contact Travis Pullen, 480-657-6517.
