It's Time to Face Your Fears and Try a Facebook Live

Nothing is scarier to most spa professionals than speaking in front of people. That fear can create an aversion to doing any activity that involves speaking on camera or to a group of people, even a small group. In today’s society, even a smartphone can transform into an anxiety-producing device when someone mentions the words Facebook Live.

Over the past few years, the Lipgloss + Aftershave team has spoken to hundreds of spa professionals about digital media. Their feedback about doing Facebook Live videos for their business is a mixed bag, with a majority of the professionals being somewhat anxious about being recorded live.

They’re afraid that they’ll make a mistake, that they won’t know what to say, or that they will say the wrong thing.  Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to all of those problems.

Make Sure You Have Ideas for Your Facebook Live

If you want to start doing Facebook Live videos but aren’t sure what to do, Jenni and I always advise our spa and esthetician clients that education is a great place to start.  Here are a few examples of Facebook Live videos that you can do that will help to educate current and potential clients:

  • Retail Product Education
  • The Benefits Of Skincare Treatments
  • Tour Of Your Facility
  • Show Snippets Of Skincare Treatments
  • Client Testimonials

It’s important to mention that while it’s perfectly acceptable to make a little mistake while filming a Facebook Live, you shouldn’t just throw caution to the wind. It’s best to plan them out to make sure that you present yourself and your business in its best light.

Be Prepared Before You Go Live

When doing a Facebook Live, be sure you’re in a place that will represent your business in the manner that you want to be received. If you want it to be quiet and tranquil, make sure you won’t be disturbed.  However, if you’ve got a really busy retail space, showcasing a little hustle in the background may be a smart idea.

If you’re going to showcase a treatment, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s a service you’ve done many times. It’s also important to make sure you know the model really well and how the model will be reacting to the treatment. This ensures that you won’t present any adverse reactions to a product or device.

It’s also a great idea to get a tripod and attachment to hold your smart phone. There are many places that sell these now and you can get them for all makes and models of smart phones.

Laugh Off the Flaws and Mistakes

Nine times out of 10, the folks watching your Facebook Live videos are your adoring clients. They are very invested in what you have to say, and for the most part, really enjoy a good connection with you! Our advice is to picture your clients’ faces as you talk to the smart phone during a Facebook Live.

Use these Facebook Live videos as an opportunity to inform and educate your clients on your vast knowledge.  Your clients love and respect you and want the information you have! They pay you on regular basis for your help and advice.

If you do happen to get tongue-tied or make a mistake, Facebook Live is your best excuse. Laugh it off and acknowledge the mistake and then move on! Your clients will love how “real” your being—it makes for great entertainment.

Our Advice? Just Do It.

If you have even the slightest aversion to doing a Facebook Live, you’ll always prioritize something else over doing the live. Our advice is to just do it! Pick a product you just love and commit to talking about it for just one minute. Maybe rehearse a few times in the mirror and then just do it. You’ll be surprised at how much you have to say and how informative the Facebook Live video will be!

You can then turn the Facebook Live post into an ad on Facebook. You can share the Facebook Live video to other groups. You can ask your team to share the Facebook Live video and you can even ask your clients to share your Facebook Live video.

Relax, have fun and watch the digital reach of your business grow. Good luck!
