Healthy Holiday Scents

Harmony Spa at Aria Hotel BudapestI know the holiday season is near when scents of pine needles, peppermint, and citrus fill the air. The specific scents may vary for each individual, but everyone can agree that holiday aromas are an important part of the festivities. That's why luxury spas around the world are celebrating with seasonal-inspired spa treatments incorporating customized essential oils such as peppermint, cinnamon, and even a whiff of apple pie.

Frankincense, Clove Bud, Peppermint, or Sweet Orange

At the Aroma Blending Bar ($35, 15 minutes) at Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (AZ), guests work with a professional alchemist to create customized essential oil blends from more than 10,000 varieties including seasonal options such as clove, frankincense, and peppermint. Utilizing the Aromatherapy Blending Bar app, guests design a unique blend for their upcoming spa treatments or combined with shea butter, body lotion, body oil, or exfoliating scrubs as a take-home or personalized holiday gift.

Deeply cleansing and hydrating, Spa al Mare at Casa Marina and The Reach, Waldorf Astoria Resorts (Key West, FL) offers a deep exfoliation ($120, 45 minutes) combining cinnamon essential oils with sea salt and coconut oil for a therapeutic skin conditioning treatment. The warm scent encourages a sense of comfort, and its immune enhancing properties make it a great oil to transform any infused water into a refreshing holiday tonic. It can then be applied in warm compresses to sore muscles and joints to provide soothing relief.

The Café Latte Body Exfoliation ($115, 45 minutes) at Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino’s Zen Spa incorporates finely ground coffee beans, revitalizing peppermint, and botanical extracts to invigorate while it exfoliates dead skin cells to reveal healthier looking skin.

The Spa at Windsor Court (New Orleans) offers a relaxing Aromatherapy Massage ($155, 50 minutes; $205, 80 minutes; $240, 1 hour 50 minutes) using peppermint essential oils paired with Swedish movements for an enhanced sensory experience. This massage is based on long fluid strokes and kneading techniques to relax the body and inspire mental clarity.

Apple Pie, Ginger Honey, Spicy Pomegranate or Aromatic Orange

Exclusively during the holidays, Harmony Spa at Aria Hotel Budapest allows guests to include a festive scent, apple pie, ginger honey, spicy pomegranate, or aromatic orange, in their tailor-made massage (30 minutes) or facial treatment (30 minutes) as part of the hotel’s Christmas Market Package (starting at $242 per night).

For an at-home remedy, the Naturopathica Meditation Aromatic Alchemy helps clients re-center and practice mindfulness.  The oil is a blend of cardamom, clove, ginger root, sandalwood, sweet orange, and sacred frankincense, recognized for its grounding aroma used in spiritual practices. Place two to three drops into palm of hand, rub hands briskly together and inhale deeply to awaken the olfactory system and calm down the mind.  The oil can also be rubbed onto belly to temper a nervous stomach.
