Job Market Tightens

The end of summer and the start of back-to-school season have tightened the job market another notch, according to a new survey by Monster, the online job site.

Online recruitment activity in 25 of the top 28 markets tracked by the Monster Local Employment Index increased in August, led by Portland and San Diego. Both markets jumped by eight points, driven by higher demand for education, community, food services, and construction workers.

The Houston market posted the biggest year-over-year gain. It now tops the list of fastest growing online recruitment markets, with a strong upsurge in demand for white- and blue-collar workers. The rising energy sector was cited for the increase.

Boston also recovered from a job slump and the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., market posted gains as well.
