U.S. Reaches Record-High Number of Cosmetic Surgeries Performed in 2017

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their annual plastic surgery statistics report.

The report covered statistics on top procedures for the industry, including both surgical and minimally-invasive procedures. A recorded 17.5 million procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2017. This is a 2 percent increase in procedures from the previous year.

Breast augmentation was listed as the top cosmetic surgical procedure for the year, with a 3 percent increase from 2016 and over 300,000 procedures performed. Breast reductions also saw a large increase at 11 percent for the year, showing a large jump from the 4 percent decline in 2016.

Tummy tucks also made a resurgence on the list after falling off in 2016, with a 2 percent increase from the previous year. Other popular cosmetic surgical procedures on the top 5 list included liposuction, nose shaping, and eyelid surgery.

Botox, commonly used to smooth wrinkles and correct lines, was named the top minimally invasive procedure on the list, with over 7.2 million procedures completed. Soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion also made the top five list for minimally invasive procedures, with fillers and chemical peels showing increased numbers from 2016.

The ASPS report also showed non-invasive procedures and body sculpting procedures saw a large increase. Cellulite treatments alone saw an increase at nearly 20 percent. These procedures often reduce fat cells using radio frequency, vacuum massage, injectable medication, infrared light, and ultrasound. Some of the most common procedures include non-invasive “freezing” technology and skin tightening procedures, and non-surgical laser treatments for cellulite.
