Experience Brooklyn Music School’s First Friday Sound Baths

Brooklyn Music School (BMS) is looking to relax its local community through the healing powers of music. From March 1 through June 7, BMS will be hosting sound baths on the first Friday of each month in an event series titled "First Friday Sound Baths."

Sound baths set out to incorporate all senses based off of the idea that we listen with our etheric, emotional, and mental body. It is believed that through deep listening, we can self-heal and connect with ourselves and others all the while creating new neural pathways for optimal sound health. Sound baths give people the opportunity to unplug through relaxation and meditation.

The BMS events will use the sounds of crystal and Himalayan singing bowls, as well as hand pans and gongs. The sessions, part of the expansion of the school’s music therapy offerings, will be facilitated by Katie Down, BMS music therapy department chair. Each session will go from 7-8:30 pm.

According to the Washington Post, sound baths have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety. They are also becoming increasingly more popular in the U.S. as Americans are becoming increasingly interested in health and wellness. Each sound bath is unique as each instrument emits a different sound frequency. Participants often feel as if they are being “submerged” in sound, hence why the service is called a sound bath. Participants have described that they feel mentally and physically rested after the completion of a session.

Interested participants are encouraged to RSVP online. Registration is available on a sliding scale with a $20 or more suggested donation that can be given upon arrival. For more information about the events, contact BMS at (718) 638-5660 or via email at [email protected].
