FDA Approves Allergan’s CoolTone Device

Allergan announced this week that it’s CoolTone device received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to strengthen, tone, and firm the abdominal, buttocks, and thighs.

By using magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS), the device penetrates into the muscle layers to induce involuntary muscle contractions. The body responds by strengthening its muscle fibers, which improves muscle conditioning and results in a more defined and toned appearance of the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs.

“As the global leader in medical aesthetics and body contouring, Allergan invests in the ongoing innovation and advancement of safe and effective non-surgical aesthetic solutions,” says Brad Hauser, vice president, R&D and general manager of body contouring at Allergan. “We do this by developing differentiated technology, such as the CoolTone device, that helps meet the needs of our customers.”

CoolTone now joins Allergan’s CoolSculpting, a non-surgical treatment that targets unwanted fat cells in the body by freezing them. Millions of CoolSculpting treatments have been performed in more than 80 countries, and Allergen is now taking orders for the CoolTone device with the first units to be shipped early in the fourth quarter of this year.

“By partnering with Allergan, I can offer my patients additional options in body contouring solutions,” says Grant Stevens, M.D., F.A.C.S., founder and medical director of Marina Plastic Surgery (Marina Del Rey, CA). “CoolSculpting, for non-surgical fat reduction, is one of the most requested treatments in my practice, and now I can introduce my patients to CoolTone for muscle toning, strengthening and firming of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.”
