One Plastic Surgery Procedure Stays Popular Despite the Rise of Nonsurgical Procedures

Modern facial plastic surgery has been continuously moving away from surgical methods as non-surgical methods, such as Botox and injectables, are considered to be patient favorites. A recent annual member survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) in 2018 found that four-fifths of treatments performed by facial plastic surgeons were cosmetic non-surgical procedures.

However, there is one surgical procedure that remains popular, especially for young adults. Rhinoplasty still continues to dominate the market. In 2018, it was performed by 96 percent of facial plastic surgeons, followed by revision surgery and eye lifts.

“The modern goal of facial plastic surgery is refreshingly natural,” says Phillip R. Langsdon, M.D., president of AAFPRS. Last year, 41 percent of patients shared that looking unnatural is their top concern when considering cosmetic procedures. This is seen specifically with patients ages 55 and under, as they are reaching out to their plastic surgeons asking for delicate, natural-looking adjustments. Nose jobs attempt to provide an inconspicuous, natural out come, which may be why they are continuously sought after.

“There are numerous resources to educate consumers before booking an appointment,” says Langsdon. “Review before and after images and don’t be afraid to ask tough questions about background and credentials during your consultation. It is also wise to consult with more than one physician before making a decision.”

AAFPRS is the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery. Representing more than 2,500 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons throughout the world, AAFPRS members are board-certified surgeons whose focus is surgery of the face, head, and neck.
