Q & A with Beverly Fox-Crismond, spa director at The Spa at One Ocean Resort & Spa (Atlantic Beach, FL)

Beverly Fox-CrismondHow many years have you been involved in the spa industry?

I have been in the spa industry for 25 years.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of being in the spa industry?

I love being a mentor to new therapists. There is always something new to learn in our industry. I also enjoy learning new things and sharing my knowledge.

What has surprised you most about working in the spa industry?

I am always surprised that people assume the spa industry is stress-free—far from it!

What qualities do you look for in your spa staff?

They have to be compassionate, nurturing, reliable, and truly care about both their clients and fellow teammates.

What is the strangest client request you’ve fielded?

Over the years, I have had numerous marriage proposals. Little do they know my husband only gets a massage from me maybe once a year.

What is the most bizarre treatment you’ve experienced?

I have to say a bamboo massage I received in the past was a little bizarre. It felt like my muscles were dough and the bamboo was the rolling pin.

What’s your favorite skincare ingredient?

Gigartina algae, by far.

Which brands are your go-to favorites?

Osea, Moroccanoil, and I am loving a line, new to me, called Circadia. The company offers a moisturizing pillowcase that I am in love with.

If you could work in any other profession in the world, what would you be?

I would love to have been a musician/singer—if I only had a good voice.

How would you sum up your personal philosophy?

I have always believed, “Treat others as you would like to be treated,” and “What goes around, comes around.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Listen to your gut.

What about your position excites you most?

I enjoy everything spa. Even after retiring from doing massage, I could not picture myself in any other industry. It is truly rewarding when you talk to a customer who has had an amazing spa experience and know you contributed to that.
