Q & A with Canyon Ranch management whiz Blake Feeney

Get to know Blake Feeney, who calmly and capably operates one of the biggest and busiest spas in the world.

How many years have you been involved in the spa/hospitality industry?

19 years - 17 in the spa industry

What was the path that led you into the spa industry?

I had to work as an intern for my degree at UNLV's Hotel College.  I ended up at the MGM Grand prior to its opening in 1993.  I met the Spa Director, Alan Espina, and he offered me a job as a spa host while I finished my degree.  That was a great job!

What is your favorite place in the whole world?

My wife, Ann, and I went on an incredible trip to Glacier National Park this summer, what an amazing place.  Just about any place that is in nature (hiking/biking) is my favorite place at that time!

If you could have any profession in the world, other than what you do now, what would you be?

Baseball coach.

What is your motto or concept that you live by?

"Pay it forward."  I think that was a movie, too!  I have been incredibly fortunate in my life both personally and professionally that people have helped me and given me opportunities to grow.  Their faith in me and willingness to support me has helped me towards success in my life.

What is your most treasured possession?

My relationships with family and friends are what get me going in the morning.  Also, my dog, Gilligan, makes me happy every day.

What’s your go-to spa treatment?

At SpaClub in LV, we have a 100 minute Mango Sugar Glo - basically a full body scrub, hydro circuit, and it finishes with a full body massage.  I like having all of the varieties in one service.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I would have to say playing baseball for Team USA just out of high school.  Playing with "USA" on my jersey was extremely meaningful for me.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I am a procrastinator - I would certainly like to work on that someday - just ask Lisa how long it took me to do this interview!

Care to share any details on family life, i.e. spouse, partner, children, pets?

I am married to Ann Feeney, we have a dog Gilligan, who I mentioned, and just recently, our cat for 15 years, Millie, passed away.  We are still in mourning.

Tell us two things about yourself we don’t know.

I love going to the movies, and snowshoeing has become my new thing.
