Q & A With Deborah Evans

Deborah Evans at Red MountainThis week I interviewed Deborah Evans, Spa and Hospitality Consultant and Principal of Deborah Evans & Associates and SpaSense Group, LLC, who has created and designed, developed, consulted, marketed and managed select destination, resort and day spas for over twenty-six years.

How many years have you been involved in the spa/hospitality industry?

27

What was the path that led you into the spa industry?

My best friend from college was working at a local spa and found out they had an opening for an accountant, so called me immediately and told me to apply, as she stated "This is so you!".  Started as a Controller for two spas, one in Austin, TX and one in Lancaster, CA.  Had a educational background in accounting/finance and a passion for wellness and preventative health, so a destination spa was my first introduction to the spa world. I had the opportunity to learn both the hospitality and spa industries.

What is your favorite place in the whole world?

Anywhere with warm, crystal clear blue water and 100 foot visibility for diving.

If you could have any profession in the world, other than what you do now, what would you be?

Own a florist, own a restaurant or a fun retail store.

What is your motto or concept that you live by?

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.   Helen Keller.

What is your most treasured possession?

My family.

What’s your go-to spa treatment?

80-minute  deep tissue massage.  Did I say leave no knot unturned?

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My integrity.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Learn that I have one mouth and two ears!!   Another motto, is that as long as I can laugh at myself, I should never run out of things to laugh at.

Care to share any details on family life; i.e. spouse, partner, children, pets?

I have a wonderful, high energy Red Heeler, Red, who I am required to entertain daily with throwing balls, doing agility exercises and walking daily.  I live in my hometown, Austin, so am glad to be close to my family and friends.

Tell us two things about yourself we don’t know.

I love camping and anything outdoors. I love hiking and geocaching. Only two things?   Also like to travel, shop, entertain, cook, garden, read, canoe, kayak, swim or anything outdoors.  So happy it is spring!
