Q & A with Mark Amoriello, Spa Director, Ascent Spa at Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite

Meet Mark. Spa Director at Ascent Spa, Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite

How many years have you been involved in the spa industry?
For over 15 years in various capacities: massage & cosmetology; product representative; consultant; operations management.

What was the path that led you into the spa industry?
My hair was down past my shoulders after I came back from overseas and my father insisted that I get a haircut in order to get a "real job". I was in a day spa waiting for my appointment and I eavesdropped on the owner speaking to a product rep about the business. Knowing that I could have a role in creating amazing experiences is what led me into this wonderful world of spa.

What is your favorite place in the whole world?
I have been very fortunate to have lived and worked in beautiful places where most others save all year just to vacation for a couple of days. The Outer Banks of N.C. for it's beaches and Taos N.M. for year round outdoor fun and adventure are at the top of my list.

If you could have any profession in the world, other than what you do now, what would you be?
Teaching....it has always been an integral part of the scope of my position and something that I enjoy.

What is your go-to spa treatment?
I'm a big fan of foot treatments (who isn't?) and a great scalp massage!

 What is your proudest accomplishment?
Developing the people that I have had the good fortune to have worked side by side. When I reach out to the spa directors, managers and supervisors that I have had a role in their professional growth and success, it makes me proud and keeps me motivated.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
That I could have that intuitive touch that some therapists have when performing services. I am well versed on the mechanics, however I do not have that special ability to have my hands guided...that's why I am in management, not in operations :)

Care to share any details on family life; i.e. spouse, partner, children, pets?
I do not have any children but I do have two nieces and four nephews that I love to spoil.

Two things about yourself we don’t know
#1. Studied martial arts for a part of my life and actually had the opportunity to fight in tournaments in Japan. #2. Having been raised in Philadelphia, I crave cheese-steaks regularly (but only indulge when I'm home visiting family).

What is your motto or concept that you live by?
Have fun in what you do as well as respect others and treat everyone as you would want to be treated in all situations.

What is your most treasured possession?
My memories that I have from all the beautiful, special places I've been along with the friends I have made along the way.
