Summer is just around the corner, which means soon we'll all be spending lots more time outside. To help transition your skincare to the new season, Vivian Bucay, M.D., founder of the Bucay Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics (multiple locations) and a San Antonio area dermatologist, shares three top tips for staying sun-safe:

  1. Choose a Mineral SPF: "When recommending sunscreens, I encourage patients to choose a mineral based one, preferably one containing zinc oxide or a blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,” says Bucay. Minerals are inert, making mineral sunscreens very well tolerated, even by those with sensitive skin. They also offer a broad range of coverage across the UV spectrum.

  2. Add Antioxidants: Look for a sunscreen that has antioxidants like vitamins C and E added. Both help neutralize harmful reactive oxygen species, or free radicals, to help protect from environmental damage.

  3. Keep it Simple: Lots of Bucay's patients don’t stay compliant when they are overwhelmed with product options, so the doctor recommend combination products that check a lot of the essential boxes—protect, hydrate, restore. She suggests looking for a product that feature a number of valuable ingredients, like an SPF with vitamins C to reduce transepidermal water loss or ceremides to maintain the skin's lipid barrier. Products that feature multiple ingredients in addition to zinc for broad-spectrum UV ray protect are a great option for those looking to simplify their skincare routines this season.
