Covalo, the platform for cosmetic ingredients, has released a study that evaluates the impact of nine environmental and lifestyle factors in metropolitan areas on dermatological health and ranked 80 cities around the world the best and worst cities for your skin. The study found that Phoenix is the best city in the world for skin health, with an ideal average yearly temperature of 72 F and the lowest observed traffic congestion, reducing the effects of stress on dermatological health. They study also found New York City and Washington, DC, show rather low concentrations of skin-damaging particulate matter in the urban air. Washington, DC, ranks 13th in the world for the high scores the capital obtained for its low levels of air pollution. Los Angeles is the worst ranking U.S. city due to the extremely high number of days of sunlight that is correlated to a greater risk of contracting skin diseases. The Canadian cities of Montreal and Vancouver are in the top five, and the European cities of Oslo, Munich, Stockholm, and Madrid also rank high and are among the best cities for skin health. Mumbai is the worst city for skin health, especially due to the high levels of stress correlated to traffic congestion, the low air quality and high humidity that decrease the skin’s barrier function and lead to the outbreak of skin diseases, such as acne. The factors included in the study relate to air, sun, and stress conditions that impact dermatological health, such as average yearly temperature, number of days of sunlight per year, average yearly UV radiation, humidity, air pollution over a year, average yearly wind speed, average daily cigarette consumption per smoker, traffic congestion and average weekly working hours per person.
