The Importance of Exfoliation in a Skincare Routine

Lack of radiance and uneven skin tone are common concerns for many people today. Dullness and uneven texture often occur as a result of buildup of dead skin cells on the surface, which can make areas of the skin feel rough or bumpy to the touch and can also give the skin a dull and blemished appearance. In addition, there are also other factors that contribute to the appearance of dull and uneven skin, such as sun damage, smoking, dehydration, and a poor skincare regimen. One of the most effective ways to help treat dull and uneven skin is exfoliation.

Exfoliation is the process of removing old, dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface, helping to improve the quality and tone of the skin. Mechanical exfoliation involves physically scrubbing the skin with a mild abrasive, and mechanical friction with abrasives exfoliates the outer corneocytes that comprise the stratum corneum layer. Results vary depending on the amount of friction and the nature of the abrasive used. Therefore, it’s important to choose the proper exfoliation formula and method for each client’s skin, as using an abrasive formula or performing a method incorrectly can lead to redness and irritation.

Fortunately, there are gentle and effective exfoliating products available, such as Ultraceuticals’s new Ultra Granule-C Microfoliant and the PHA Refining Solution used in the Refine and Hydrate professional treatment. The Ultra Granule-C Microfoliant is a transformative cream-to-serum formula that contains granules of vitamin C that exfoliate and melt into the skin upon massaging, leaving it looking polished and glowing. In addition to vitamin C, the product also contains powerful antioxidants and vitamin E to keep skin in good condition.

The PHA Refining Solution is used in the Refine and Hydrate professional treatment, which is a mild hydrating peel that contains a skin-identical acid (gluconolactone) that rejuvenates all skin types, including sensitive skin. The treatment helps to refine the surface of the skin, leaving it looking plumped, rejuvenated, brighter, and glowing. What’s more, the peel treatment is suitable for all Fitzpatrick’s and skin types, is a great option for first-time peel guests, and requires no to minimal downtime.

As with all Ultraceuticals products, the Ultra Granule-C Microfoliant and the PHA Refining Solution contain ingredients obtained from sustainable resources where possible; and are formulated without propylene glycol and parabens. An in-house extensive panel testing of end formulations tests the efficacy of new products, as well as product attributes, such as skin texture and aroma. “In-house R&D formulating and consumer testing are critical to enabling us to efficiently create highly effective products with appealing consumer characteristics,” says Dr. Geoffrey Heber, founder of Ultraceuticals. “We are able to obtain quick feedback as to how effective and appealing a product is and make changes, if necessary. We offer formulations that are results-driven without compromising on texture and aroma, and that’s what I feel makes us unique.”
