Deep Impact

Kristen Thérèse Leonard, Makeup Artist and Marketing Manager for Your Name Professional Brands

What are the hot colors in cosmetics this fall? We are seeing a lot of red lips for fall. Unlike other red lip trends of the past, all shades of red seemed to make it to the runways this fall. We saw tangerine hues at Hakaan and Ralph Lauren; burgundy hues at Missoni, Gucci, and Hermès; and true red at Diane von Furstenberg.

What looks will be popular this fall? Spider-like lashes are a popular trend we saw on the runways for fall. From Gucci to Valentino to Lanvin, chunky ‘60s-style lashes are going to motivate us all to add a few more coats of mascara.

What new product can’t you live without this season? Why? Your Name’s new Luxury Matte lipsticks are an absolute must this season. They are right
on trend with color choices and are among the few matte lipsticks on the market that are actually comfortable to wear.

What is the best way to transition clients’ makeup from summer to fall? Juicy lip colors were very popular for summer, and they make an easy transition to fall. It’s a matter of making the color richer. You can still use that bright tangerine or coral gloss on clients, just layer it on top of a deeper lip liner or lipstick.

What are must-have cosmetic items, and what can be dropped from a makeup routine? Finishing powders are a must for fall. Whether going bold or bare, a soft, glowing finish will complete the look. I think women can get rid of all the different glosses they have in their bags and just pick one that will work well with all shades of lipsticks.

Jo Levy, National Artist for BECCA

What are the hot colors in cosmetics this fall? This fall, there will be plenty of earth-toned and neutral palettes, a departure from the coral shades that were all the rage this spring and summer.

What looks will be popular this fall? Tawny and honey-colored cheeks paired with sheer, nude lips will be popular this fall. The sultry, smokey eye is back for the season, but there will be a softer take on it, using warm brown, bronze, and taupe shadows. These shades complement women of all skintones.

What new product can’t you live without this season? Why? I can’t live without a liquid highlighter that enhances the complexion with a subtle glow. As the weather begins to cool down in the fall, it is more difficult to maintain a naturally dewy-looking complexion. I use BECCA Illuminate Wash in Moonlit to add a sheer shimmer to the high parts of the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, and the temples.

What is the best way to transition clients’ makeup from summer to fall? Start
by transitioning the level of coverage needed on the skin with the correct foundation products. If the client was using a mineral powder or tinted
moisturizer in the summer, introduce them to a foundation that provides them with a bit more coverage where needed on the skin. I often also recommend wearing a lightweight primer to keep makeup looking fresh and to keep the skin smooth prior to makeup application.

What are must-have cosmetic items, and what can be dropped from a makeup routine? Tinted moisturizer, concealer, blush, mascara, and lip balm are must-have products. Any colored mascara other than black, brown, or deep plum can be dropped from a makeup routine. I also recommend clients separate their everyday makeup from their special occasion makeup, so they can keep what they know can be worn on a daily basis for a more natural look separate from fun, bolder shades that are typically reserved for a night out.

Annie Mayo, Makeup Artist and Founder of Advanced Mineral Makeup

What are the hot colors in cosmetics this fall? Fall always brings rich, deeper colors than summer. Also, look for smokey eyes with jewel tones in deep burgundy and grey. Lips can be either deep or natural this season.

What looks will be popular this fall? Either a smokey eye with bold lips or a smokey eye with a natural lip color will be popular.

What new product can’t you live without this season? Why? A can’t-live-without product would be a great concealer and foundation to make the skin appear flawless.

What is the best way to transition clients’ makeup from summer to fall?
Transition clients from summer makeup to fall using their wardrobe to reflect single color schemes to go with burgundy, blacks, and chocolate browns—the colors of fall.

What are must-have cosmetic items, and what can be dropped from a makeup routine? Great skin is always the basis for great makeup, so foundation and a great concealer are a must this season. I would drop lip liner to reflect a softer mouth.

Dominic Cruz, Makeup Artist and Director of Education for Kryolan

What are the hot colors in cosmetics this fall? Eyeshadows from the Viva collection, such as Fennel, a white; Curry Leaf, a green; and Annatto, a pink, represent hot colors this fall.

What looks will be popular this fall? Charcoal and black smokey eyes will be popular.

What new product can’t you live without this season? Why? Everyone should be using our long-lasting HD collection for a natural look.

What is the best way to transition clients’ makeup from summer to fall? Summer was all about the bright colors. This fall, we have very similar tones with a smokey twist.

What are must-have cosmetic items, and what can be dropped from a makeup routine? Rock, our new lip stains are great. I would say that the standard lipstick can take a backseat this fall.

Kevin Mendelson, International Educator for Jane Iredale—The Skin Care Makeup

What are the hot colors in cosmetics this fall? It’s really a season of warm and cool combined. For eyes, emberglow and honeysuckle shades will be hot, with gold as a shimmering extension of the hue. Red lips are also popular this fall—from true reds to heat summer up even more to deeper tones like auburn to add depth in the cooler months of autumn.

What looks will be popular this fall? Smokey eyes are still popular, and brighter colors will be toned down. Also, eye liner is still strong as an upper lid extension but not as dramatic. A flushed color on the cheeks will be hot.
What new product can’t you live without this season? Why? Jane Iredale’s Lip Fixations are a must-have in every color, because they last for hours. They are weightless, long-wearing, non-flakey, non-drying, and are wearable as a matte or with the glaze overlay.

What is the best way to transition clients’ makeup from summer to fall? The transition will be based on the client’s mood and skin color. I suggest wearing the summer look until the summer tan fades from the skin. It
ultimately will depend on how the client feels. If she’s bored with the makeup, it defeats the point of wearing it.

What are must-have cosmetic items, and what can be dropped from a makeup routine? A lash curler, mineral foundation powders, gloss and balm for lips, mascara, and bronzer or blush are must-have items. I suggest dropping anything that isn’t working anymore based on a client’s style,
age, and personality. It’s fun to get a fresh perspective from different makeup artists from season to season. The advice of a single trusted one can be a good way to reassure clients, but a fresh opinion yields less of a paradigm shift that could benefit her. The way she feels about how she looks
is the payoff for wearing any makeup. If she feels good in it, then it’s worth the choice in texture and color.
