We’re in the thick of sunshine season, which means that the skin-conscious are smearing on some sun protection every time they step outside. However, according to dermatologist Ronald Moy, M.D., FAAD, of Moy Fincher Chipps Rodeo Facial Plastics and Dermatology, it’s just as important to take those precautions even when spending the entire day inside. We reached out to Moy to find out more on why staying indoors doesn’t necessarily protect us from those harmful rays and the steps we can take at home to safeguard our skin.

1. Why is it important to wear sunscreen daily, indoors and outdoors?

Ultraviolet (UV) rays come straight from the sun and damage skin by destroying collagen and elastin, which is needed to maintain a youthful complexion. These rays can cause damage both indoors and outdoors which is why it is important to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30+ every 2 hours in order to shield your skin from these harmful UVA rays. Skin damage is also caused by chemicals, pollution, and UV damage that goes through windows.

 

2. When staying indoors, what areas of the face/body should people focus most on when it comes to sunscreen?

Our time indoors is an all-time high, but that does not protect you from the UV rays. These powerful beams are still able to penetrate through glass windows and negatively impact our skin. People should focus on applying sunscreen to any areas not covered with protective clothing such as the face and tops of hands.

 

3. How can people avoid damage from UV rays while indoors?

As the misconception that you can’t get sun exposure if you are indoors is so widely believed, people don’t think that they need to apply sunscreen daily, which is incorrect. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is a great way to make sure that you are always protected. There are great moisturizers, lotions, and even makeup that have sunscreen in them that can help your skin as well as protect it.
