Antioxidant Power of Plums

I’m a longtime fan of the fruit as a healthy snack, and was eager to learn about its topical benefits. So I chatted with Teresa Stenzel, director of education for Bioelements, which makes the Plump Start product that caught my attention. Here’s what she had to say about plums.

Tell us more about the benefits of plums.

We have three key Australian wild plum ingredients in this formula that saturate skin with massive amounts of age-fighting antioxidants. Kadaku plum (terminalia ferdinadiana) has the world’s highest vitamin C concentration, equivalent to 100 times that of an orange. Vitamin C promotes synthesis of new collagen in the skin. Kadaku plum also has important antioxidant sources (vitamins A and E) that protect the skin cells from being damaged by free radicals. Illawarra plum (podocarpus elatus) naturally contains an antoxidant capacity level that is higher than most other fruits, and seven times that of blueberries. Burdekin plum (pleiogynium timorense) contains high amounts of vitamin C that contribute to slowing the rate of free radical damage.

Why were plums chosen in this product over other antioxidants?

These were selected specifically due to the high levels of antioxidants that are naturally contained within the fruit, which scavenge free radicals from 70 – 80 percent. We’ve packed Plump Start with high levels of antioxidants, you can actually see the natural plum color. This plum blend hydrates, nourishes, and rejuvenates for younger looking and more radiant skin.

How does it complement the other ingredients in the formula?

Each of the ingredients in this formula works together to improve fullness, nourish, and smooth out fine lines. Our Collagen-4 Complex includes this wild plum blend, plus a moisture-magnet marine bioactive to push hydration through the epidermis and help support skin's natural volume.

Who can benefit most from this product and from plums?

Anyone can use this formula, as it’s appropriate for all ages and skin types, but particularly beneficial for lines and wrinkles; skin that has lost its youthful plumpness and vitality; and dull tones, or aged and lifeless skin.
