On this episode of The Well Way with American Spa podcast, which is sponsored by the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference (IECSC), we are honored to sit down with spa and wellness industry icon Deborah Szekely, cofounder of Rancho La Puerta (Tecate, Mexico) and founder of the Golden Door (San Marcos, CA). Known as the “godmother of spa” and with a history of making an impact in wellness, government, her local community, and beyond, Szekely, at age 97, continues to lecture weekly at Rancho La Puerta, sits on several boards, and is active in the New Americans Museum (San Diego).

In this podcast, Szekely discusses the fascinating history of Rancho La Puerta and some of the reasons why she believes people are so attracted to it and want to return time and time again—the positive energy from the resort and surrounding mountains has a lot to do with it. Another important factor is its employee retention rate. According to Szekely, there can’t be happy guests without a happy staff, and that’s why the ranch offers so many benefits and perks to employees, which keeps them loyal.

Because of Szekely’s long history in the spa and wellness industry, she has seen it grow and evolve over the years. It’s even more interesting to find out what she believes is in store for the future of the industry. In addition, she touches on the challenges in the industry, offers advice for those who aspire to be a part of it, and explains how offering programs for people of all ages is a smart business decision.
