5 Benefits of Utilizing CBD Oral Care

When you think of CBD, you likely think of its anxiety reducing benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and total body wellness. But there’s another area of the CBD industry that’s growing that hasn’t yet received the recognition it deserves: CBD oral care. Research on the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) toothpaste and mouthwash is abundant. To clarify, CBD is the compound found in cannabis plants that does not produce psychotropic effects like its cousin THC. Instead, CBD works with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to regulate countless processes and is considered to have medicinal value. Not surprisingly, this means it can have a major impact on your oral and overall health when it’s included in your daily routine. Here’s a quick snapshot at what can happen when you use CBD toothpaste and mouthwash.

1) You Naturally Eliminate Decay-Causing Bacteria

Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are two primary culprits associated with tooth decay, but there are others can contribute too. Many people attempt to eradicate them with potent antibacterial solutions, but that knocks out the healthy bacteria your digestive and oral system needs. Unfortunately, the bad bacteria tends to recolonize first so the bad bacteria can totally take over. The good news is, you don’t have to wipe out all bacteria and dry your mouth out with alcohol-based mouthwashes. Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) indicates that CBD can eliminate Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus too, thus reducing your risk of getting cavities.

2) You Reduce Inflammation

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about half of all Americans over age 30 have gum disease. At its early stages, gum disease may appear with minor symptoms like inflammation, bleeding, and soreness, but when it progresses, people have issues like bone and tooth loss. However, researchers found that cannabinoids (CBD) can diminish the inflammation associated with periodontal disease, which can contribute to better oral health and eliminate tender gums.

3) You Can Improve Overall Health

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) reports that “for a long time, it was thought that bacteria was the factor that linked periodontal disease to other disease in the body; however, more recent research demonstrates that inflammation may be responsible for the association.” The AAP further states that “treating inflammation may not only help manage periodontal diseases but may also help with the management of other chronic inflammatory conditions.” The organization links periodontal disease with conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, respiratory disease, and cancer, among other things.

4) You Restore pH Balance and Increase Remineralization

Acids are produced when oral bacteria breaks down carbohydrates, which includes most sugars. These acids cause the pH of your mouth to drop which results in an acidic environment in which precious minerals are stripped from your teeth. As teeth demineralize, they become susceptible to decay. Conversely, teeth naturally absorb the minerals in your saliva and grow stronger in a neutral pH environment, so it’s imperative to maintain a neutral pH as much as possible. Because CBD has antibacterial properties, a pH-balanced mouth will stay balanced.

5) You May Reduce Bone Loss Associated with Gum Disease

Bone loss associated with advanced gum disease can only be repaired with surgery.  People who struggle maintaining healthy gums and bone will want to get their oral health in check as quickly as possible. Recent CBD research found that those who undergo CBD treatment lose less bone than those who go without—there’s a noticeable difference in bone levels in as little as 30 days.
