Discover How Oral CBD is Being Used in Spas Today

The use of topical formulas containing cannabidiol (CBD) has become more common in spas for their many benefits to the skin and body. Some spas today are also incorporating oral CBD products into their treatments and as pre- and post-treatment options. From gummies, oils, tinctures, and capsules, to powdered drinks and candies, oral CBD products are popping up more and more on spa menus and retail shelves today. With all topical and oral CBD products, it’s important to understand where CBD stands legally in the U.S.

When the Agriculture Improvement Act (also known as the 2018 Farm Bill) was passed, it removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products containing less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) federally legal. However, hemp-derived CBD products containing more than 0.3 percent THC are still defined as marijuana, making them federally illegal, but legal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally, but some states allow them for medical use. Bottom line, be sure to check all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and seek legal guidance before using or offering any CBD-based products at your spa. Also, advise clients on any medication to consult with a medical professional before using CBD.

Take Care

“Consuming CBD edibles is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18 or who is pregnant or nursing. If the customer has a health condition they are concerned about, it is important for them to consult with their doctor about whether ingesting CBD is a good option for them.” —Joan Sutton, CEO and co-founder, 707 Flora

Relax and Enjoy

There are several ways that oral CBD products can be included in a client’s spa experience. One way is as a pre-treatment option to help a client relax and unwind upon early arrival, as an add-on to a treatment, or available in the retail area for clients to continue the chill vibe at home. “Having CBD options available to clients supports a holistic approach to wellness with different product offerings to suit the client’s daily wellness ritual,” says Chris Hetherington, co-founder and CEO of Peels.
