A Gold's Gym in Davenport, IA, is closing, but it will remain a fitness center as part of an agreement with the Scott County (IA) Family YMCA.
The Gold's Gym will close on Oct. 31, and the new Y branch will open in the building on Nov. 8, Gold's Gym owner Chris Agnew and Scott County Family Y CEO Brad Martell announced last week in a letter to members.
Agnew and his wife, Margy, donated all of the facility's equipment, including fitness equipment, computers and TVs, to the Y, which will waive joining fees for current Gold's Gym members and retain most of the staff, according to the Quad City Times newspaper.
According to the letter, the Agnews decided to close the gym after 10 years to "pursue a new chapter in their lives."
"As we met over the past months to discuss collaborative ideas for serving more people and meeting our respective mission and business goals, an opportunity to further strengthen our community developed," the Agnews wrote. "Our strategy is to further the Y mission to inspire more people to live healthy lives by capitalizing on the current facilities, outstanding staff and high-quality programs and services."
The Y currently operates five facilities in the area, as well as a camp and youth sports programs.
