LA Fitness Acquires Buffalo, Rochester Athletic Clubs

LA Fitness, Irvine, CA, announced today that it is acquiring four coed Buffalo (NY) Athletic Clubs and two coed Rochester (NY) Athletic Clubs.

The transaction will be completed on Monday, LA Fitness said.

The Buffalo Athletic Club (BAC) for women and Rochester Athletic Club (RAC) for women locations, as well as the CrossFit Buffalo Athletic Club Extreme Training facility, are not included in the sale. Each will continue to be operated under the BAC/RAC ownership.

"It has been our privilege to serve the Buffalo and Rochester communities for the past 33 years, and we are excited about this new chapter in our company's history," BAC/RAC Operating Partner Jeremy Heim said in a statement. "We look forward to our continued role in providing excellence in health and fitness training through concentrating our mission on the BAC/RAC for Women."

LA Fitness said it will honor all active memberships that it purchases from BAC/RAC coed clubs, including those for personal training. All active BAC/RAC coed members with multi-club privileges will have access to all BAC/RAC coed clubs, and they also will have access to the six LA Fitness clubs currently in the greater Buffalo and Rochester areas if they sign an LA Fitness agreement, the company said.

The Buffalo Athletic Club was founded by Rick Rugg and Bob Schiffhauer in 1980, The Buffalo News reported today.

LA Fitness was the No. 1 club company on Club Industry's Top 100 Clubs list this year with an estimated $1.7 billion in 2012 revenue. The company had remained relatively quiet regarding acquisitions this year after acquiring several clubs in 2011 and 2012.
