Defining "Spa."

The true number of spas in the United States continues to allude the spa industry, primarily due to the lack of definition of a spa. Much like you will find 2 star motels named 'XYZ Resort,' it is common to find two-chair hair salons hanging the 'spa' sign outside their door.

A recent 'Talk of the Nation' special on NPR said the spa industry has 'grown to 450 properties.' A recent dot.com business plan boasts of 32,000 US spas. So where is the reality? To the best of our knowledge, probably somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 spas in the US, consisting of various types of spas.

The International SPA Association has categorized spas into seven types:

Club Spa—fitness is its primary purpose and a variety of professional spa services are offered on a day-use basis.

Cruise Ship Spa—provides professional spa services, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices.
Day Spa—offers a variety of professional spa services to clients on a day-use basis.

Destination Spa—provides guests with lifestyle improvement and health enhancement through professional spa services, physical fitness, educational programming and on-site accommodations. Spa cuisine is served exclusively.

Medical Spa—individuals, solo practices, groups and institutions comprised of medical and spa professionals whose primary purpose is to provide comprehensive medical and wellness care in an environment that integrates spa services, as well as conventional and complementary therapies and treatments.

Mineral Springs Spa—offers an on-site source of natural mineral, thermal or seawater used in hydrotherapy treatments.
Resort/Hotel Spa—owned by and located within a resort or hotel providing professional spa services, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices.
