Fitness Talk: Jeff Skeen of ReEnvisionMD

Meet Jeff Skeen, founder and CEO of ReEnvisionMD, who has 26 years of experience in the fitness industry. ReEnvisionMD is a rapidly growing integrated medical group that collaborates with health clubs to provide a holistic, lifestyle-based healthcare model.

What was the path that led you into the fitness industry?

My entry into the fitness industry came through an entrepreneurial opportunity presented by former high school friends who were establishing a Gold's Gym franchise in Virginia. They extended an invitation for me to join them as a business partner, and while I initially viewed it as a short-term venture before pursuing a more traditional career path, it quickly proved to be far more than that. What began as an exploratory opportunity evolved into a deeply rewarding and legitimate professional career that I am proud to be a part of.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of being in the fitness industry?

The fitness industry presents a unique and multifaceted set of challenges, the most significant being the diverse range of needs, goals, and expectations among a large and varied customer base. Effectively addressing the individual requirements of thousands of members demands a high level of adaptability, personalized attention, and a comprehensive understanding of both physical and mental wellness.

On the other hand, the most profoundly rewarding aspect of this industry is the opportunity to witness, firsthand, the transformative impact that proper fitness guidance can have on an individual's life. Seeing members achieve meaningful progress — not only in their physical health but in their overall mental well-being — serves as a constant source of motivation and a powerful reminder of the meaningful work being done each day.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Over the course of my 34-year career in the fitness and healthcare industries, my greatest source of pride has been successfully navigating and executing complex financial transactions. This includes multiple successful portfolio exits with three private equity firms, as well as overseeing more than $850 million in equity and debt transactions.

What has surprised you most about working in the fitness industry?

What has surprised me most is the depth of opportunity this industry has to offer. Early in my career, I could not have anticipated that fitness would become not only a professional passion, but the foundation of a fulfilling and multifaceted career spanning more than three decades. The industry's capacity for growth and reinvention has consistently exceeded my expectations.

Where do you think the industry is heading?

I believe the fitness industry is on a transformative path toward a deeper integration with wellness and healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a pivotal moment, underscoring the need for fitness operators to broaden their value proposition beyond aesthetics and physical appearance. To remain relevant over the long term, operators must position themselves as essential partners in their members' overall health and well-being.

What positions have you worked in that you feel have been most influential to your career?

Serving in the roles of owner, CEO, CFO, and CIO has been instrumental in shaping my professional perspective. These positions have not only afforded me the opportunity to build and sustain relationships with private equity firms, but have also given me a comprehensive, multi-dimensional understanding of the fitness business—from strategic leadership and financial management to investment oversight and operational execution.

Was there a time you had to make a decision in your career that ended up changing your destiny?

In 2008, amid the height of the Great Recession, my team and I successfully secured significant capital from a private equity firm with the goal of rolling up multiple health club chains operating at a mid-price point. As economic conditions deteriorated, we began observing a clear market bifurcation—health clubs positioned at either the premium or value end of the spectrum were demonstrating considerably stronger resilience than those occupying the middle tier. Recognizing this shift, we made the strategic decision to convert our entire chain to a high-volume, low-price-point model. That pivot not only enabled us to weather one of the most challenging economic climates in recent history but ultimately positioned the business for a highly successful exit with our private equity partners.

If you could work in any other profession in the world, what would you be?

I consider myself fortunate in that I no longer need to contemplate that question—I have the privilege of working at the intersection of two industries I am deeply passionate about: fitness and healthcare. The opportunity to positively impact people's health and well-being on a daily basis is something I do not take for granted.

How would you sum up your personal philosophy?

My personal philosophy is rooted in faith and service. I prioritize my relationship with Christ above all else, and from that foundation, I strive to serve those around me by helping individuals identify their goals and supporting them in achieving meaningful outcomes.

How do you like to spend your time away from work?

Outside of work, I am most fulfilled when I am investing in the relationships that matter most to me. I cherish the time I spend with family and close friends, as those connections provide both grounding and perspective.

What are your three greatest priorities in life?

My three greatest priorities are my faith in Christ, my family, and my friendships. These pillars guide my decisions, shape my values, and provide the foundation from which everything else in my life flows.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

The most impactful advice I have ever received came from my father, who taught me that life, at its core, is about people. He instilled in me the belief that if you lead with genuine care and put people first, financial success will follow naturally. That principle has informed both my personal and professional life ever since.
