Meet Lisa Cooper, director of fitness and chief procurement officer at The Little Rock Athletic Club, who has more than 30 years of experience in various aspects of the fitness industry.

What was the path that led you into the fitness industry?

I was a high school track and cross-country athlete. When I went to college, I wanted to do something to help others in health and fitness, plus be active. I chose nutrition and dietetics as my major, with minors in athletic training and corporate/community fitness.  Knowing I didn't want to work in the hospital/nursing home healthcare system with my degree, I pursued the fitness industry.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of being in the fitness industry?

Most rewarding: seeing other accomplish their health and fitness goals and making those changes part of their lives. Most challenging (but part of the journey that keeps it exciting): keeping up with the fitness industry trends

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Professionally, it is building the group exercise program we have at the Little Rock Athletic Club. Personally, it's the birth of my son.

What has surprised you most about working in the fitness industry?

It's not just about fitness goals, but many times people just want you to listen and be acknowledged.

Where do you think the industry is heading?

The industry is headed toward more AI, but also in a way that we can personalize to each member.

What positions have you worked in that you feel have been most influential to your career?

Teaching group fitness classes.

Was there a time you had to make a decision in your career that ended up changing your destiny?

I accepted an internship at UAMS in Little Rock, AR, after college graduation. I was raised in Minnesota/Iowa but never returned. After completing my internship, I started working at the Little Rock Athletic Club as one of four assistant fitness trainers. Working at an athletic club was my dream job, as opposed to returning to the Midwest with an offer to work as a dietitian in a hospital.

If you could work in any other profession in the world, what would it be?

Travel. I love to see the world!

How would you sum up your personal philosophy?

Prioritize health and fitness, grow with purpose, and try to live fully in the present.

How do you like to spend your time away from work?

Family and outdoor activities, such as hiking with my dogs and lake time.

What are your three greatest priorities in life?

Besides faith, family and health/fitness.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

You are solely responsible for your energy, happiness, career, and choices, but keep a balance in your personal and professional life.
