A Look at Some of the Sustainable Initiatives at Spas

Take a look at the ways these spas have implemented sustainable and green initiatives into their businesses:

“Our philosophy includes limiting the footprint on the environment. The tree houses at Tree Spa embrace the surroundings, and they are at one with nature. The rooms themselves are built on stilts and do not disturb the wildlife or the beauty around us at Hidden Pond. One of our favorite new lines at the spa is produced right here in Kennebunkport, ME. Body Frost, created by a local business owner, has been a wonderful new addition for us. We are able to reuse packaging when we have body scrubs refilled. With this line, there is no shipping, which reduces our carbon footprint, as the owner herself delivers this to us and is local. Other green initiatives: we minimize printing, paper use, and use online tools for our therapists, reports, and client intake forms. Following every spa service, we make spa water for guests using herbs picked from our gardens on the property. We also reuse glassware in place of disposable cups to reduce landfill waste.”—Mary Weisheit, spa director, Tree Spa at Hidden Pond (Kennebunkport, ME)

“At the heart of Kenoza Hall is an emphasis on wellness that carries throughout the property. Kenoza Hall’s unique brand of earthy luxury is dotted throughout the stay, from a daily morning walk to the purposeful analog experience that balances technology with omission of overstimulation, and Kneipp-inspired body treatments at Hemlock Spa, an ode to the area’s early Swiss and German settlers. These treatments, rooted in naturopathy and hydrotherapy, extend beyond the four walls of Hemlock Spa and into the 55 acres of land, which include walking trails, gardens, a pool, and access to a private lake. The greenhouse-like relaxation lounge brings the outdoors and natural elements indoors with a cold water plunge, wood stove, outdoor barrel sauna, a brief Kneipp circuit with varying textures and sensations, and plenty of plants. Single-use water bottles are not used throughout Hemlock Spa nor in the main inn building. Hotel guest rooms feature fullsize bath amenities that are refillable as opposed to single-use, travel-sized products.”—Kirsten Harlow Foster, co-founder, Foster Supply Hospitality, which owns Kenoza Hall (Kenoza Lake, NY)

“Given our location on the ocean, Asbury Ocean Club Spa’s design is marineand water-base driven. The idea behind this was to offer services to our guests that not only embrace the theme, but also implement green initiatives in our daily operations. For instance, to eliminate the waste of disposable plastic bottles and cups, glassware is provided for each guest. The spa offers reusable slippers to promote less disposable waste. We strive to provide a luxury spa experience in an eco-friendly environment to help keep our earth beautiful.”—Christina Mundy, spa manager and residential experience manager, Asbury Ocean Club Spa (Asbury Park, NJ)

“Omni Mount Washington Resort provides fresh mountain air and a pristine landscape amid nearly 800,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest. Inspired by our setting, The Spa at Omni Mount Washington Resort brings the outdoors inside to treatment rooms with sweeping views of Mount Washington, the Presidential Range, and Crawford Notch. Our signature treatments feature custom Mountain Mist products rich with traditional New England botanicals that have been used for centuries to soothe muscles, smooth and protect the skin, and reduce inflammation. The spa selects products and retail items based in part on companies’ sustainable practices, the natural and holistic ingredients, and how they were produced and packaged for sale.”—Monica Blessing, spa manager, The Spa at Omni Mount Washington Resort (Bretton Woods, NH)

“With a holistic approach to sustainability, THE WELL at Mayflower Inn implements green initiatives in a variety of ways, as we believe small changes can make a long-term impact. For one, using non-toxic cleansers and products are a great way to be more eco-friendly. We are a plastic-free facility and use purified water to reduce plastic waste in the spa. In our retail store, we support local businesses with clean practices, such as CBD brands that source from local organic farms, small-batch artisan apothecary products, and clean skincare lines. As we are situated on 58 acres of land, we place a large emphasis on bringing nature into the spa experience, like in our biophilic thermal pool, which incorporates lush greenery that honors our surrounding land. We offer signature outdoor experiences that educate our guests on the environment, such as our ecology walks and foraging classes, to name a few.”—Mary Donahue, director of spa and wellness, THE WELL at Mayflower Inn at Mayflower Inn & Spa, Auberge Resorts Collection (Washington, CT)

“Built to focus on natural elements, The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn brings in the outdoors with mineral water, natural light, and rock formations while incorporating the natural elements of fire, water, and air. Treatments with natural ingredients are also featured, such as the Total Indulgence Body Treatment, which is a wonderful mélange of natural ingredients and healing techniques. We make a concerted effort to use corn-based products instead of plastics and partner with companies that work hard to reduce their carbon footprint through the ingredients they use in their packaging and their environmental efforts, such as planting trees and using recycled products. In addition, we look to replace equipment or mechanical systems with more energy-efficient models.”—Jeff Winkel, director of spa, The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn (Asheville, NC)
