WHAT WAS THE PATH THAT LED YOU INTO THE SPA INDUSTRY?
During my time at the University of Alabama pursuing a degree in business management, I was eager to gain practical experience alongside my studies. I began my career in management by taking on the role of spa supervisor at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa (AL), part of PCH Hotels.
WHAT ARE THE MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING PARTS OF BEING IN THE SPA INDUSTRY?
I would say that the biggest challenge, but also an exciting challenge, is keeping up with the ever-changing trends. The spa industry is constantly evolving, with new treatments and technologies emerging regularly. Staying current and relevant requires continuous learning and adaptation. And for me, the most rewarding part is the building of relationships. Developing strong connections with clients and seeing their satisfaction and loyalty grow can be deeply gratifying, both personally and professionally.
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?
Balancing full-time work while pursuing my degree and gaining valuable experience was challenging and required significant sacrifices. However, those sacrifices were crucial in shaping my career and getting me to where I am today.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE SPA INDUSTRY?
What has surprised me most about working in the spa industry is the depth of emotional and physical transformation that guests experience. Beyond just relaxation, many clients nd that their time at the spa profoundly impacts their overall wellbeing and outlook on life. Additionally, the strong sense of community and teamwork among spa professionals has been unexpected and deeply rewarding, as everyone collaborates to create exceptional experiences and support each other.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SKINCARE INGREDIENT?
Hyaluronic acid would have to be my favorite. Since moving to California five years ago, my skin has become drier. Hyaluronic acid really saved my skin.
WHERE DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY IS HEADING?
Having been in the fitness industry for the last seven years, I’ve seen clients not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but also really searching for more holistic wellness integration. There’s a growing emphasis on integrating mental, emotional, and physical wellness. Spas are increasingly offering comprehensive wellness programs that include mindfulness practices, nutrition advice, and stress-management techniques alongside traditional treatments.
WAS THERE A TIME YOU HAD TO MAKE A DECISION IN YOUR CAREER THAT ENDED UP CHANGING YOUR DESTINY?
After graduating college, I was presented with an opportunity in the medical industry in Florida. Eager to return home after being away for so long, I took the job, unaware of how dramatically my life would shift. I eventually left that position, met my now husband, spent seven years in the fitness industry, and ultimately found my way back to the spa and hospitality world. Life has a way of taking unexpected turns, but embracing the journey and trusting the process reveals that you’re always where you’re meant to be. Enjoy the surprises along the way.
IF YOU COULD WORK IN ANY OTHER PROFESSION IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
The airline industry. To travel the world is my ultimate dream.
WHAT POSITIONS HAVE YOU WORKED IN THAT YOU FEEL HAVE BEEN MOST INFLUENTIAL TO YOUR CAREER?
The positions that have been most influential to my career are spa supervisor, business development manager, and marketing coordinator. As a spa supervisor, I developed critical management skills and gained hands-on experience in creating exceptional guest experiences. Leading a team and handling daily operations provided a solid foundation for my career in the spa industry. As a business development manager, I honed my skills in strategic planning and client relationship management. I learned how to identify growth opportunities, build partnerships, and drive business success, which has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. As marketing coordinator, I got insights into branding, market trends, and consumer behavior. Crafting marketing strategies and campaigns enhanced my understanding of how to effectively communicate a spa’s value and attract a diverse clientele.
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY?
Embrace growth through adaptability, remain curious and open to new experiences, and approach challenges with resilience and a positive mindset. I believe in the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement, while also valuing the connections and relationships we build along the way. By staying true to one’s values and embracing change, we can navigate life’s twists and turns with grace and purpose.
HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME AWAY FROM WORK?
Spending time with family and friends is a top priority for me. Whether we’re hitting the beach, lounging by the pool, or planning our next adventures together, it’s the best. I’m also a big foodie, so I love exploring new restaurants and bars around San Diego.
WHAT ARE YOUR THREE GREATEST PRIORITIES IN LIFE?
1. Personal growth and learning: continuously expanding my knowledge, skills, and self-awareness is vital. I strive to embrace new experiences and challenges as opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally. 2. Meaningful relationships: building and nurturing deep, supportive connections with family, friends, and colleagues is essential. These relationships provide a strong foundation of support, love, and shared experiences. 3. Wellness and balance: maintaining a healthy balance between work, personal life, and self-care is crucial. Prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing ensures that I can lead a fulfilling and productive life while staying true to my values and goals.
