Tips For Attending a Trade Show

Professional makeup artist Noreen Young provides advice on attending a show like the upcoming IECSC New York and IECSC Chicago.

I am so excited and honored to again educate at the IECSC New York show. Yes, it’s back! I am so happy and so are other professionals and spa owners. I have missed it all--the education, the networking, and the excitement of the show floor. There are so many emerging brands and our standby beautiful brands, and amazing show specials to take advantage of. The show floor is also a great place to find some educational classes and demos, as well. I always learn something new.

As an educator (and attendee) and beauty and skin professional, I have seen my share of conferences. So, I want to tell you a few tips for attending a show in today’s times:

1. Prepare yourself and save money. Buy your ticket to a show you’d like to attend as soon as possible. Book your flight and room in a timely manner for a better rate, too.

2. Check out the show classroom schedules available online and see what classes may be a fit for you. Make a list of them. Also, check out the show floor and see who’s exhibiting.

3. On the day of the show, eat a good breakfast. Don’t just do a coffee on the run! Bring bottled water or coconut water to keep yourself hydrated and your brain working. Be ready to learn!

4. Dress cozy and comfy. Although I have a passion for fashion, I have learned the hard way that high heels aren’t a good shoe choice. You’ll be walking a lot and hurrying to class rooms all over the convention center. I wear Skechers Go Walk or another style by that brand. Or wear a lower or flat heeled shoe. They look good and keep you going, and if you have back or feet issues, you’ll thank me later. You can style up with accessories or your outfit. Even if it's hot outside, it may be cooler inside. I have seen girls wear shorts, mini dresses, and forgot to bring a sweater or light blazer. It’s cool in classrooms and the educators are hot under those bright lights. The audio visual equipment and lighting call for a bit cooler room. Pack a pashmina, sweater, or light blazer just in case!

5. Bring a notebook, iPad, or pen and paper. You will want to take notes. Bring a tote bag and wear a lighter handbag. It's so much easier to manage your things and get around.

6. When you get to the show floor, you’ll want to explore all that the exhibiting vendors have to offer. Pay particular attention to Show Specials. They really are special and there are lots of deals to be had. A word to the wise, don’t grab every brochure, booklet, or free sample you may see. Especially if you are not fully interested. The booth and these things cost a lot of money. So, save it for someone who really wants or needs them. Also, papers, brochures, and catalogs weigh you down.

7. Don’t just visit the show floor and attend a few classes. Take some advanced education or business classes. Buy your ticket early to save money. We never stop learning and these classes reignite your passion for the beauty industry or your spa and salon.

8. Make sure to pack some comfort food like an apple, a banana, veggie sticks, crackers, or a small sandwich. Also, pack a candy bar or hard candies. Yes, the convention center has delicious food and drinks available but just in case you get a craving or happen to feel weak and hungry. It happens and you’ll be prepared. Don’t forget to take a break. Shows are exciting, fun but exhausting, too.

9. Attend the show with an open mind and heart. The shows deliver valuable information and networking opportunities. See old friends and make new friends. There will be hundreds of new products and nationally known speakers. Spice up your retail mix this fall, see new trends and learn something new!
