With the #nomakeup trend circulating Instagram and Twitter, Paul Stanislaw M.D., founder of Stanislaw Facial Plastic Surgery, diagnosed preventative measures to keep skin youthful into your 60s. Ever since Beyoncé released her song “Flawless” in 2013, women all over the internet engage with the main lyrics “I woke up like this” and post selfies with hashtags about their bare, morning look. Celebrities use the trend to encourage an appreciation of natural beauty, yet they often don't tell about their cosmetic work. Stanislaw’s created a list of creams, procedures, and treatments to help your skin achieve the same glow.
People approach non-surgical and surgical procedures for multiple reasons, such as divorce, a high school reunion, or simply a boost in confidence. Stanislaw noticed an increased interest in cosmetic treatments. “Improvements in surgical techniques have allowed for amazing results that are natural without the tell-tale signs of surgical intervention," Stanislaw says. "For this reason, younger women are pursuing facelifts and necklifts. A decade ago, the average age for a facelift was in the 60s. Currently, the average age for a facelift is in the 50s."
According to Stanislaw, 80 percent of procedures use a local anesthetic without an IV or pills for sedation. With only a slight pinch, the treated area stays numb for eight hours, and patients leave the office with a new facelift or necklift. Stanislaw suggests general anesthesia for only 20 percent of people who have a fear of needles.
Stanislaw’s first tip for any age involves wearing medical grade sunblock with at least nine percent of micronized zinc oxide. With a practice dedicated to the cosmetic enhancement of the face, head, and neck, he offers his expertise to aging.
Tips for your 30s
- Apply daily topical medical grade vitamin C, vitamin E, and retinol or prescription strength tretinoin to the entire face, including lower eyelids and the neck. Avoid the upper eyelids, one centimeter above the eyebrows, and the corners of the nose and mouth.
- Keep up with facials, microdermabrasion, enzyme or chemical peels monthly by a licensed aesthetician.
- Consider Botox or Dysport injections to the glabella (area between the eyebrows), crow's feet (wrinkles at the outside corners of the eyes), and forehead.
Tips for your 40s
- Injectable fillers like Restylane and Juvederm help with embedded wrinkles between the eyebrows, smile lines (wrinkles that extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and marionette lines (wrinkles that extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin).
- Use injectable fillers to the cheeks to maintain the gentle, smooth curves and volume of youth. You do not want to add more volume then you had when you were younger. The goal is to spackle out the hollows that form across the cheeks. These hollows create shadows that did not exist in youth. The goal is to not to create excessively large and wide cheeks.
- Lip injections to maintain youthful volume as women in their forties start to notice that their lips are becoming smaller.
- A facelift and necklift for premature signs of aging such as excessive skin, fat and wrinkles under the chin, jowls, and marionette lines.
Tips for your 50s and 60s
- Benefit from upper and lower eyelid surgery, browlift surgery, and a facelift or a necklift.
