Q & A with Spa Industry Veteran Noreen Young

Noreen Young

Meet Noreen Young, celebrity makeup artist, educator, SpaTrade blogger and Wellness reporter for a Morning show on WJXT-TV in Florida.

How many years have you been involved in the spa/hospitality industry?

29 years!

What was the path that led you into the spa industry?

I somehow knew…I would have a love affair for beauty and skin care. At 6 years old, I was giving my friends Sandbox facials to gently exfoliate their skin. In addition, mud masks with a bonus live Ladybug on top. I would hold court, be their skin therapist, and preach pretty talks! My backyard sandbox was the very first spa I opened.

*I also studied to become a nursing nun. I knew something was wrong when the Mother Superior would stop me as I skipped to chapel to pray and asked. “Why are your lips so shiny Noreen” to which I innocently replied. “ Its lip gloss Reverend Mother”.What is your favorite place in the world?Even though I have traveled some, fabulous places... NEW YORK CITY is where my heart and home is. It feeds my soul and my imagination.

If you could have any profession in the world, other than what you do now, what would you be?

Voice overs for radio and TV.

What is your motto or concept that you live by?

I have two please!

"A woman without lipstick or lip gloss is like a day without sunshine"

In addition “Always treat others as you’d like to be treated

What is your most treasured possession?

A picture frame my twin brother gave me that is in the shape of a heart. It did not come with his photo instead it had the words " One day at a time". I did not know how much those words and it would mean to me until he died a few months later. The last time I saw him was on our birthday when he gave me the frame as one of the gifts. My twin was born with Downs Syndrome and I was not.

What’s your go-to spa treatment?

Definitely a FACIAL. My face is my calling card. I always practice what I preach.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Not sure if that  has come yet. I am proud that I ventured on my own as an educator instead of being a platform educator for other companies. I think I am a better educator for that. I do not want to push lines. I want to educate. I am thrilled that right after I did this I came out with a “Professional Guide How To makeup” video, the next year a book “Entertaining in your Salon or Spa. Then a DVD “Diamonds aren’t a Girl’s best friend…Makeup Is” and another DVD “Beauty Begins with Brush”. Now, my latest educational baby to come is on Facials.  All of these take a lot of discipline to produce and create one after another.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Not sure. I am happy to be me…ever changing like a butterfly.
Care to share any details on family life, i.e. spouse, partner, children, pets?
I moved to sunny Florida for my southern husband who I met on a business trip. I was here to answer beauty questions on a radio talk show. He was the sales manager of that station and he sold ME on him. He told me in NYC I am a little fish in a huge pond and in Jacksonville, I will be a huge fish in a little pond. He reeled me in!

Tell us two things about yourself we don’t know.

THREE please!

I used to stutter and was (and still am at times) very shy.

I am a foodie,

I love to cook & travel.
