Apples are among the most widely consumed fruits in the U.S. In fact, every American consumes an average of 26 pounds of apples and apple juice per year. Apples are not only tasty, they also offer many benefits to the body, such as providing heart protection, boosting brain health, and assisting in managing weight.
The fruit is also considered a symbol of beauty and love, and anyone using apple-based skincare products are sure to agree. From its hydrating and brightening benefits to its UV protection and scar-healing ability, apple-based products and treatments are coveted among spa-goers today for their ability to help improve skin and leave it looking healthier and younger. “Apple-based products are gaining popularity as more people turn toward natural, organic, and plant-based skincare,” says Natalie Pergar, lead skin care trainer at Eminence Organic Skin Care. “Apples have antioxidant, exfoliating, and hydrating properties, which help nourish and tone skin, making them a fantastic addition to both in-spa and at-home treatments. Plus, apples are incredibly versatile—you may find apple-derived ingredients, such as pulp, juice, and more in a variety of skincare and wellness products, giving people many ways to incorporate this fruit into their daily routine.”
We asked our experts about the benefits of apple on the skin and how to effectively incorporate this fruit into your spa’s offerings and here’s what they said.
Q: What are some of the benefits of apple-based products on the skin?
A: “Apples are full of vitamins, antioxidants, and natural acids that are beneficial in a variety of ways for the skin. Malic acid, a gentle AHA, helps remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. It’s also a humectant that helps retain hydration in the skin, and it works well with the natural vitamin C content to help brighten and even skintone. The mild astringent properties can prevent and treat acne breakouts by balancing oil production and reducing excess sebum. The high antioxidant content, particularly in polyphenols and flavonoids, protects the skin from early signs of aging caused by oxidation and environmental damage, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. With natural anti-inflammatory properties, apple extract may soothe irritated skin and can be beneficial for people with sensitive skin or conditions, such as rosacea.”
