Tips for Treating Summer Skin

With summer heating up, be sure to advise clients on how to take care of their skin with these tips and treatments from spa professionals:

Apply Correct Protection – Katherine Cuomo, supervisor at The Well Spa at Miramonte Resort & Spa (Indian Wells, CA)

  • Expert Tip: “Apply sunscreen often! The desert heat is very strong on the skin, and we always recommend using an SPF 50 sunscreen to prevent skin damage and aging. At The Well Spa, we incorporate HydroPeptide Non-Tinted at the end of every facial so that guests are prepared to take on the day.”
  • DIY Recipe: “Miramonte Resort & Spa is known for citrus groves, so we love utilizing the fruits and herbs on the property in the spa. Combine 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, ¼ cup Greek yogurt, and 1 tablespoon of honey and mix until blended. Apply to clean skin and rinse with warm water after 10 minutes.”

Treating Over-Exposed Skin – Danielle Doran, beauty services manager at Canyon Ranch Tucson (AZ)

  • Expert Tip: “If the skin becomes over-exposed, gently cleanse skin and use a soothing facial mist and moisturizer afterwards. It can also be quite helpful to drink more water, eat anti-inflammatory foods, such as kale, berries, and avocado, and get some good sleep.”
  • DIY Recipe: “Mash 1 quarter of a ripe avocado in a small bowl with 1 tablespoon rolled oats and 1 tablespoon manuka or raw honey. Apply the mask to a clean face for 10 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and apply a gentle moisturizer.”

Balancing Hydration and Exfoliation Kenia Zavala, supervisor at AquaVie Spa, and Melissa Baesa, esthetician at AquaVie Spa at The Westgate Hotel (San Diego)

  • Expert Tip: “Balance is the key to good skincare. Healthy skin needs exfoliation and hydration, so listen to your skin when it tells you what it needs. Nurture your skin by using a moisture-packed face mask when it’s dry, and an oil absorbing face mask when it’s congested.”
  • DIY Recipe: “Create a soft sugar scrub to exfoliate the skin. To make this at home, combine a dollop of honey with aloe vera and oatmeal for soothing hydration.”

Add Foliage to Skincare Routine – Carrie Sotebeer, director of spa at Spa Montage Healdsburg (CA)

  • Expert Tip: “Adding a natural ingredient, such as calendula helps reduce sensitivity and soothes, hydrates, and protects the skin. Not to mention, it is also a natural anti-inflammatory and can brighten and tighten the skin.”
  • DIY Recipe: “Create a coconut salve with calendula to help with sunburn relief. First, allow the flowers to dry, then place dried flowers and coconut oil together in a Dutch oven and simmer on heat to melt down. Place liquid in jars to firm together and use as needed.”
